RV camping near St. John, Kansas
St. John sits in Stafford County in south-central Kansas, on the sand-prairie transition between the tallgrass and shortgrass plains. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Wetlands and Wildlife National Scenic Byway, with Quivira National Wildlife Refuge just to the south and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, operated by Kansas Wildlife and Parks, to the north near Great Bend.
Campground options in the immediate area are small, independent RV parks rather than resort-style destinations. Berts RV Park and Santa Fe RV serve overnight travelers on US-50 and US-281, while Cottonwood Grove RV Park Great Bend, Kansass, Evergreen Inn and RV Park, and West Wind Villas add options within reasonable driving range. Sites are generally full-hookup with pull-throughs suited to larger rigs.
The surrounding landscape is flat sand prairie and cropland dotted with salt marshes. Public land nearby is managed for wildlife rather than developed recreation, so most RV camping happens at private parks and campers day-trip to the refuges.
Things to do near St. John
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge is the main draw. The 22,135-acre refuge features a unique combination of rare inland salt marsh and sand prairie, and 331 species of birds have been recorded there. Two roads, one 14 miles and the other 4 miles in length, afford opportunities for wildlife viewing, and a 1.2-mile nature trail passes through woodlands, grasslands, and across a marsh on an elevated boardwalk, with a wildlife observation tower on the south side of Little Salt Marsh. A Kid's Fishing Pond is located near the Visitor Center and works well for families.
Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, northeast of Great Bend, is a companion stop for birders and one of the most important shorebird stopover sites in the interior United States. The Kansas Wetlands Education Center along K-156 provides current sightings and interpretive displays. Boats are prohibited at Quivira, and watercraft use is restricted at Cheyenne Bottoms, so activities center on driving, walking, photography, and seasonal hunting.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for an RV trip. In spring, waterfowl and sandhill cranes can begin arriving as early as February, wading birds such as herons and egrets begin arriving in March and April, and most shorebirds arrive in late April and early May. Temperatures are mild, but Kansas sits in Tornado Alley and severe thunderstorms are most common from April through June, so a weather radio is essential.
Fall migration is spread out. The peak period for duck viewing at Cheyenne Bottoms occurs early to mid-October, and whooping cranes are most apt to stop at Cheyenne Bottoms in late October into early November. At Quivira, geese and ducks can number in the hundreds of thousands at their peak in November.
Summer brings hot, humid days routinely above 90°F and strong prairie winds. Winter is quieter: bald eagles winter on the area and are present from as early as November to as late as March, snow geese use the marshes in large numbers, and small private RV parks may see limited occupancy with some services scaled back.
Booking and how to reserve
Private RV parks in the St. John area typically take reservations by phone or through their own websites and online listing platforms. Local parks such as Berts RV Park, Santa Fe RV, Evergreen Inn and RV Park, and West Wind Villas are best contacted directly to confirm rig-length limits, hookup amps, and pet policies. Cottonwood Grove RV Park Great Bend, Kansass is a common alternative if St. John parks are full.
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge does not offer campground reservations because it does not have a developed campground. At Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, camping is permitted only in the primitive campground located half a mile west of the area office, with no reservations and no hookups. Prior to hunting any species on Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, all hunters are required to check in through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks online system.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small, rural RV parks rather than resorts. Sites are usually level grass or gravel with full hookups, and pull-throughs are common because much of the clientele is overnight travelers on US-50 and US-281. Amenities like laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi vary widely by park, so confirm what matters most when booking.
Roads to the refuges include gravel sections, and Cheyenne Bottoms is reached by turning south at Redwing and following the gravel road. Boats are prohibited at Quivira, and at Cheyenne Bottoms in-the-water propeller-driven boats are permitted only during open waterfowl seasons and airboats are not allowed at any time, so plan around wildlife viewing, walking, and driving rather than paddling.
Cell service can be spotty away from town, wind is a near-constant on the open prairie, and biting insects are worst near the marshes in warm months. Bring bug spray, sun protection, and a NOAA weather radio for storm season.
