Campgrounds and RV parks near Stafford, KS

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, just south of town, is the main draw. The refuge protects over 22,000 acres of inland salt marsh and sand prairie on the Central Flyway and offers an auto-tour road around Big Salt Marsh, walking trails, and observation points where sandhill cranes, whooping cranes, geese, and shorebirds concentrate during migration. Cheyenne Bottoms, north of Great Bend, complements Quivira with additional wetland wildlife viewing and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Both sites are free to enter and suit a half-day loop by vehicle. In town, Stafford has small local museums and access to farm-country backroads. Great Bend, about forty minutes north, adds a zoo, grocery resupply, and full-service RV parts and repair.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for an RV trip. March and April bring migrating sandhill cranes and shorebirds staging at Quivira, while September through December combines cooler nights with the fall passage of Canada geese, ducks, sandhill cranes, and occasional whooping cranes. Both shoulder seasons see fewer severe thunderstorms than midsummer. Summer is hot and often humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the low-to-mid 90s Fahrenheit and a real risk of severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes from spring into early summer. Travelers should monitor NOAA Weather Radio and choose parks with storm-shelter access or nearby community shelters. Winter is cold, dry, and windy. Some private RV parks remain open year-round for monthly stays and workforce guests, but amenities such as pools and laundry rooms may run reduced hours. Water hookups can be affected during hard freezes, so confirm winterization plans with the park before arrival.

Expect wide-open prairie, big skies, and steady wind. Sites are usually gravel or grass, level, and spaced for easy backing. Shade is limited, and awnings should be stowed when winds pick up, which is common in the afternoon. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable in Stafford and along US-50 and US-281, though it thins out on refuge back roads. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Stafford and St. John, with larger supermarkets and RV service in Great Bend and Hutchinson. Insects, particularly mosquitoes, are heaviest near the wetlands from late spring through early fall. Bring repellent, and plan wildlife viewing for early morning or evening when temperatures drop and bird activity peaks.
