Campgrounds and RV parks near Westmoreland, KS

Tuttle Creek Lake is the anchor for outdoor activity in the area. The reservoir is one of the largest lakes in Kansas and supports boating, swimming beaches, and fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie. Boat ramps and courtesy docks are spread across the developed units of the state park. On land, the park has hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, plus a dedicated horse camping area in the Randolph unit. Wildlife viewing and hunting are supported by thousands of acres of managed public land surrounding the lake. Away from the water, day trips from Westmoreland reach the Konza Prairie tallgrass preserve, Kansas State University in Manhattan, and the shops and gardens of Wamego. Rocky Ford State Fishing Area sits close to the lake for quieter shoreline fishing.

Peak camping season around Tuttle Creek runs from late spring through early fall. Developed loops at River Pond and other Tuttle Creek units are generally open from April through October or November, with reduced services outside that window. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly, and reservations should be made well in advance. Spring brings green Flint Hills, wildflowers, and rising lake levels, but also the region's severe weather season with thunderstorms and tornado risk. An EF3 tornado struck Westmoreland, causing one death and three injuries, destroying 22 homes, and damaging additional homes, so travelers in spring should monitor watches and warnings and know their shelter plan. Fall is often the most comfortable season for RV travel, with lower humidity, cooler nights, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter is cold and windy on the plains, several loops close or reduce services, and high water conditions can occasionally affect access on top of the Tuttle Creek dam.

Expect open plains scenery, big skies, and steady wind. Sites in the Tuttle Creek units range from developed loops with water and electric hookups and modern shower buildings to primitive sites with limited services. Rigs up to full big rig size fit at several loops, and dump stations are available across the park. Oregon Trail RV Park - Westmoreland has gravel pads, full hookups on most sites, Wi-Fi, a coded bathhouse, and a dog park. It is a short walk to a small downtown with a gas station, grocery, and restaurant. Cell coverage in town is generally reliable but can drop off in the more remote park loops. Summer brings biting insects near the water, and burn bans are common in dry periods, so check current fire restrictions before arrival.
