Campgrounds and RV parks near Bellefonte, KY

Water is the anchor. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is centered on the 300-acre Greenbo Lake, which features a boat dock and marina, and the park has over 25 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback trails plus a lake stocked annually with trout. The Ohio River frontage near Greenup and Ashland adds barge-watching, bank fishing, and boat launches, with Holiday Point Marina and Campground providing direct river access. Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday have two children's playgrounds, miniature golf, a large swimming pool, a fishing pond, and hiking areas on site, plus a 24-hour laundry and camp store. Off-site, the Country Music Highway (US-23), Carter Caves State Resort Park, and downtown Ashland's museums and restaurants are all within an easy drive.

Peak season runs late spring through early fall. Several private campgrounds remain open year-round, including Ashland / Huntington West KOA, while smaller private operators such as Little Bear Island typically run an April-through-fall season. Advance reservations are advisable, particularly during summer weekends and holidays. Summers are warm and humid, and organized activities and theme weekends at private parks concentrate in these months. Shoulder seasons offer cooler nights and thinner crowds. Spring brings frequent rainfall to the Ashland area, which can leave low-lying riverside sites soft: the land at Little Bear Island Campground can hold water, especially the spots closest to the river, so route planning after storms matters. Fall foliage across the Appalachian foothills peaks in October. Winter camping is limited. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at their campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and travelers are advised to contact the park directly for available resources. Year-round private parks such as the KOA remain the more reliable cold-weather option.

Terrain is a mix of river bottom and Appalachian foothills. Landscapes vary from relatively flat riverside locations to more hilly settings at state parks, which can affect site selection. At Greenbo Lake, some sites have steep grades that are not suitable for big rigs, so review site diagrams before booking a long trailer or motorhome. Hookups and connectivity vary. The KOA offers full hook-up, slide-out friendly, big-rig-friendly sites with cable available on every site, while state park loops typically provide a mix of primitive, electric and water, and full hookup sites with a shared dump station. Free Wi-Fi is available at Greenbo Lake, and cell service is generally reliable at developed campgrounds but may weaken in more remote hollows. Housekeeping rules are standard: pets on leash, quiet hours enforced, and campfires only in designated fire rings. The Kentucky Department of Parks permits non-licensed vehicles such as golf carts in campgrounds only for individuals with a disability, and the policy is enforced for guest safety.
