Campgrounds and RV parks near Greenup, KY

Fishing and boating dominate the local calendar. Greenbo Lake holds the second and third state bass records and is stocked annually with roughly 17,000 trout. The state park adds a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide, hiking trails through the surrounding forest, an amphitheater, and an 18-hole miniature golf course in the camping area, open April through October. The Jesse Stuart Lodge on the lake includes a full dining room. Off the water, families can hike the trails around the lake, tour two nearby covered bridges and the Old Fort Earthworks, or drive into Ashland for shops and restaurants. At Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, on-site amenities include a swimming pool, mini-golf, sand volleyball, a fishing pond, playgrounds, and in-season theme weekends aimed at families.

Peak RV season near Greenup runs from late spring through early fall. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is open year-round, but Kentucky State Parks note that water and other hookup resources cannot be guaranteed during months with freezing temperatures, so shoulder-season visitors should contact the park ahead of arrival. The miniature golf course and most park recreation programming run April through October. Summer brings the fullest campgrounds, warmest lake temperatures, and organized group activities, along with humid afternoons and pop-up thunderstorms. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, and the state park requires a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday arrivals. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with fall foliage in the surrounding hills typically peaking in mid to late October. Winter camping is possible at year-round private parks like Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, though occasional snow, freezing rain, and cold snaps can affect travel on I-64 and rural approach roads.

Kentucky State Parks cap each site at eight occupants, with a maximum of two units per site, and prohibit bringing firewood from outside Kentucky to slow the spread of Emerald Ash Borer; firewood is sold in the campground. Golf carts are allowed in the campground only with a permit purchased at check-in, and guests with a disability placard are exempt from the permit fee. Some sites at Greenbo Lake have steep grades that do not suit large rigs, so review site details when booking. At Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, sites are full-hookup, slide-out friendly, and set up for big rigs with pull-throughs and easy I-64 access. Expect free Wi-Fi, cable, a 24-hour laundry, clean bathhouses, and family programming on summer weekends.
