Russell Kentucky camping overview
Russell sits on the Ohio River in Greenup County in far northeastern Kentucky, directly across from Ironton, Ohio and a short drive from Ashland, Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia. The tri-state location makes it a practical base for RV travelers, with river camping, an inland state resort park, and a full-service KOA all within a short drive.
The surrounding region is Appalachian foothills country, with rolling wooded ridges, the Ohio River corridor, and the smaller Little Sandy River shaping where campgrounds are located. Options near Russell run from a private island campground on the Little Sandy to a lakeside state park campground with a lodge, plus family-oriented KOA sites and small river marinas. Site types include full hookup RV pads, electric-and-water utility sites, and primitive tent spots. The climate is humid subtropical, so the practical camping window centers on spring through fall, with summer being the busiest booking season for lakeside and pool-equipped campgrounds.
Things to do near Russell
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is the main outdoor draw, with a 225-acre lake known for bass fishing and annual trout stocking, a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide, wooded hiking trails, and the fieldstone Jesse Stuart Lodge honoring the Kentucky poet laureate. The Ohio River corridor adds boating, barge-watching, and riverside walks in Ashland and Greenup. Little Bear Island Campground and Holiday Point Marina and Campground both offer direct river access for fishing and boat launching. Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday have on-site miniature golf, a swimming pool, a stocked fishing pond, and two playgrounds. The Country Music Highway (US 23) runs south through the region for a scenic drive.

The practical camping season around Russell runs from spring through fall, roughly April into October, matching the operating windows of most area campgrounds and the pool season at the KOA, which typically opens in early May and closes in mid-October. Spring brings leaf-out, wildflowers, and the return of lake activity at Greenbo, though river-level campgrounds can be muddy after heavy rain, and the dirt road onto Little Bear Island can hold water.
Summer is the peak booking season. Weekends and holiday weeks at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park and the KOA fill earliest, so reserve well in advance. Fall delivers strong color across the Appalachian foothills, cooler nights, and quieter campgrounds, and is often the most comfortable season for touring. Winter is the off season: the KOA pool is closed, and Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water availability at campgrounds during months when freezing temperatures are possible.
How to book campgrounds near Russell
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is booked through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance and must be made at least one day before arrival, with a two-night minimum on peak-season weekends. Sites include full hookup, electric-and-water, and primitive options, and some pads have steep grades that do not suit big rigs, so check site notes. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday currently does not accept online reservations and asks guests to call the campground directly. Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and Valley Breeze RV Campground take direct bookings through their own contacts.
What to expect camping near Russell
Expect a mix of riverside private parks and one inland state park set in rolling Appalachian foothills. Roads into most campgrounds are paved or well-maintained, though the dirt access to Little Bear Island can hold water after rain. Site spacing varies: the KOA has spacious 50-amp pull-throughs with full hookups suitable for big rigs with slides, while Greenbo Lake includes a mix of full-service, electric-and-water, and primitive sites, some on steep grades. Greenbo has three dump stations and central bathhouses. Free Wi-Fi is provided at the KOA and at Greenbo through TengoInternet. Mosquitoes and ticks are common in summer near the rivers and lake, so plan accordingly. Kentucky state parks prohibit importing firewood from outside the state.

Winters are short but genuinely cold, with January lows near 28°F. Locals' insider tip: time your Russell, KY RV trip for the second weekend in October for unbeatable foliage along KY-7 toward Grayson Lake.
weather.gov/jkl/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Russell, KY?
You'll do great, and Russell is actually a forgiving place for first time renting an RV. Roads like US-23, KY-244, and the AA Highway (KY-9) are wide, well-maintained, and far less hectic than urban interstates. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the awning, slide-outs, and the holding tanks, so you're never left guessing. Class C motorhomes and small travel trailers are the easiest first-timer picks. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on a quiet road like KY-693 before heading to your campground, and watch for the 12 ft 6 in clearance on some older Ohio River bridge approaches. You've got this.

Your host is also just a message away for quick troubleshooting on RV-specific systems like the water pump or generator, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone at pickup and you will roll through your trip knowing backup is always there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Russell, KY?
Russell, KY is a perfect launchpad for an RV road trip with three states within a short drive (Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia all meet just minutes away). Top routes include: Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge for sandstone arches and hiking (about 2.5 hours west), Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio for waterfalls and cliffs (about 2 hours north), New River Gorge National Park in West Virginia for whitewater and the iconic bridge (about 2 hours 45 minutes east), and Lake Cumberland for houseboat-style RV camping (3.5 hours south). Cross-border travel between US states is straightforward on RVezy. Mexico travel is not permitted, and Canada trips require host approval, so just message the host first if you're dreaming bigger.
nps.gov/neri/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on my Russell, KY RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A coaches land around 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle's mpg. Kentucky gas prices tend to run a bit below the national average, and Russell sits right off I-64 with multiple stations including a Pilot Travel Center just across the bridge in South Shore, OH. Pro tip: fuel up on the Kentucky side before crossing into Ohio or West Virginia, where prices often jump 10 to 30 cents per gallon. Plan roughly $0.30 to $0.50 per mile in fuel for a Class C and you'll be in the ballpark.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Russell, KY?
For best campgrounds near Russell, KY, book as early as you can, especially for summer and fall weekends. Kentucky State Parks (including Greenbo Lake and Carter Caves) open reservations up to 12 months in advance through their official Reserve America-powered system, and fall foliage weekends in October often sell out by midsummer. Private parks like Armco Park in Ashland and KOAs typically book 3 to 6 months out for peak dates. Weekday and shoulder-season trips are far easier, you can often grab a site 1 to 2 weeks ahead. Insider tip: if a state park is full, check Hipcamp for private farm and riverside sites along the Ohio and Little Sandy rivers, which often have last-minute openings.
parks.ky.gov/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Russell, KY?
Russell sits in the foothills of the Appalachians along the Ohio River, and the driving is honestly very RV-friendly. US-23 (the Country Music Highway) is a wide, scenic four-lane that handles Class A motorhomes with ease. I-64 runs just south and gives you fast access west to Lexington and east to Huntington, WV. Watch for two things: rolling hills on KY-7 and KY-1 toward Greenup mean steady use of lower gears, and the older Simeon Willis Memorial Bridge to Chesapeake, OH has tighter lanes, so use the newer Ironton-Russell (Oakley C. Collins Memorial) Bridge with your motorhome rental Russell instead. Winter ice storms are rare but real, so check road conditions before December through February trips.

nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup logistics should I plan for in Russell, KY?
Russell hosts offer add-ons that make life easier, especially for first-timers. fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.86How does payment and the security deposit work for my Russell, KY rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, so everything is tracked and protected. At booking you will see the nightly rate, taxes, RVezy service fee, your chosen protection plan, and a refundable security deposit that is separate from your booking payment. The deposit is held as a pre-authorization, not charged, and released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid surprises, snap photos at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and follow the host's cleaning expectations. That is how renters in Russell consistently get their full deposit back after returning the keys.
