Campgrounds near Worthington, Kentucky
Worthington sits in Greenup County in northeastern Kentucky, along the Ohio River corridor between Ashland and Portsmouth. RV travelers use the town as a base for reaching lake camping in the Appalachian foothills, riverside marinas, and interstate-accessible parks that connect Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia.
The closest options include Little Bear Island Campground and Holiday Point Marina and Campground, both oriented toward Ohio River recreation. Inland, Greenbo Lake State Resort Park sits in Greenup County and features 58 utility sites and 36 primitive sites, three dump stations, two bathhouses with hot showers, a lakeside swimming pool with a spiraling waterslide, and a fieldstone lodge. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday offers full-hookup pull-throughs off I-64 at exit 179, and Valley Breeze RV Campground provides an additional local option.
The mix covers day-trip anglers, families running a full week with kids, and travelers who need a highway-friendly overnight stop with utilities and Wi-Fi.
Things to do near Worthington
Water and hills drive most itineraries. Greenbo Lake covers about 225 acres and is known for bass fishing, holding state records, with bluegill, crappie, and an annual stocking of roughly 17,000 trout, plus hiking loops in the surrounding forest.
Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday get on-site recreation without leaving the campground, including a swimming pool, a stocked fishing pond, a walking trail, and heated cabins for non-RV guests. The property also serves as a practical base for day trips into Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. Off-site, downtown Ashland's Paramount Arts Center and the Ohio River waterfront in Huntington, West Virginia give a rainy-day backup.
At Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, an 18-hole miniature golf course in the camping area is open April through October.

The region runs a full four-season climate. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window for lake-focused trips, with warm days, active marinas, and full campground programming. Summer weekends at state parks and the KOA fill early, especially around holidays, so booking ahead is important.
Kentucky State Parks post an important caveat for shoulder-season travelers: due to weather, they cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, and travelers should contact the park directly for available resources during months conducive to freezing. Plan winter and early-spring stays with onboard fresh water.
The Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday operates year-round, which matters for cold-weather travel. It is centrally located to major travel routes with nearby restaurants, festivals, events, and historical sites. Fall foliage in the Appalachian foothills typically peaks in mid-to-late October.
Booking and reservation systems
Greenbo Lake uses the Kentucky State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 12 months in advance. Sites can be occupied by a maximum of eight people, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate.
The Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday currently handles bookings by phone rather than the KOA web portal, as internet reservations are not available for this location, and travelers are directed to call the campground directly at 606-929-5504. Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and Valley Breeze RV Campground take reservations directly through the property.
Kentucky State Parks prohibit the importation of firewood from outside the state to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in state park campgrounds.
What to expect on site
State-park sites at Greenbo Lake vary widely in grade and size. When booking, campers should pay close attention to site details, as some have steep grades that are not suitable for big rigs, and the campground mixes primitive, electric-only, and full-hookup pads with picnic tables and fire rings. Maximum units per site is two, which may include one camper plus one tent.
Expect a different feel at the KOA. Sites are all full hookup, slide-out friendly, and spaciously set, with cable available at every site, though some visitors note limited shade.
Golf carts are allowed in Kentucky State Park campgrounds by purchasing a permit at check-in, and disabled guests displaying a hanging tag are not required to purchase a permit.
