Campgrounds near Grantsville, Maryland
Grantsville sits in Garrett County in Maryland's Allegheny highlands, within a cluster of public lands that includes Savage River State Forest, the largest state forest in Maryland at more than 54,000 acres. The area is defined by hardwood ridges, cold trout streams, and the Savage River Reservoir, with elevations high enough that summer temperatures typically run cooler than the surrounding lowlands.
RV travelers have several distinct options within a short drive. New Germany State Park offers a developed campground with cabins, a small lake, and bathhouse facilities. Big Run State Park provides rustic sites near the Savage River Reservoir suited to smaller rigs. Savage River State Forest manages primitive sites at Rabbit Hollow and other scattered areas for campers seeking solitude, while Sleepy Hollow Campground and Bumble Bee RV Park and Campground round out the private-park choices closer to town.
Access is straightforward from Interstate 68, which runs east-west just north of Grantsville and connects the region to Cumberland, Morgantown, and Pittsburgh.
Things to do around Grantsville
New Germany State Park anchors most family itineraries. Its 13-acre lake, formed by a historic mill dam, is open for swimming, fishing, and paddling, and the park has about ten miles of multi-use trails through mixed hardwood and hemlock forest.
Big Run State Park sits at the northern end of the Savage River Reservoir and serves as a base for fishing, boating, and hiking, including access to the Monroe Run trail. The wider Savage River State Forest supports hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cold-water trout fishing along the Savage River.
In winter, the same trail network is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and the area historically hosted the first organized ski event south of the Mason-Dixon line in 1941.

The camping shoulder seasons are typically the most comfortable. Spring brings wildflowers and higher stream flows for anglers, though May is the wettest month, with rainfall on more than twenty days on average. Late spring is also when black flies and mosquitoes appear in the forest.
Summer is peak season for New Germany State Park and Big Run, with lake swimming, warm evenings, and busy campground weekends. Sites can be reserved up to 365 days in advance, so popular weekends are often taken well ahead. Elevation keeps temperatures milder than in Baltimore or Washington, with July highs averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit.
Fall delivers reliable foliage from late September through mid-October across the Allegheny ridges, with cool nights and lower rainfall. Winter is cold and snowy: Grantsville accumulates well over two feet of snow in an average year, and cabins, campsites, and pavilions at New Germany are subject to closures during a multi-year water system upgrade.
How to book
Maryland state park and state forest campgrounds, including New Germany State Park, Big Run State Park, and the online-reservable sites at Savage River State Forest, are booked through the state's central reservation system at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Reservations can generally be made up to 365 days in advance and at least one day before arrival.
Big Run and St. John's Rock require reservations through the online system, and walk-in use is not permitted at either. Most other Savage River State Forest primitive sites, including Rabbit Hollow, are first-come, first-served; Rabbit Hollow has no pay pipe at the site, so payment is made at the state forest headquarters kiosk.
Private options such as Sleepy Hollow Campground and Bumble Bee RV Park and Campground are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect
Public campgrounds in this area run rustic. Big Run offers unimproved sites with a picnic table and fire ring, pit toilets, and no hookups, best suited to smaller RVs. Savage River State Forest sites, including Rabbit Hollow, provide only a picnic table and fire ring, with no water, restrooms, or electric service. New Germany State Park has a bathhouse with hot showers, a dump station, drinking water spigots, and some electric sites, but its loops are relatively tight and better suited to smaller Class C or travel-trailer rigs than large motorhomes.
Cell service is nonexistent at New Germany State Park and limited across most of the surrounding forest. Black bears are present, so food must be stored securely. Nearest full-service supplies are in Grantsville, Frostburg, and the Deep Creek Lake area.

Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you arrive, your pup will love the leashed trails at New Germany State Park, the cool creek wading at Savage River State Forest, and the wide-open trails around Deep Creek Lake State Park. Many local campgrounds welcome dogs too. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy paws, since the high-elevation forests here stay damp even in summer.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/newgermany.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Grantsville?
Yes, RV delivery in Grantsville is one of the best perks on RVezy, especially if you're a first-timer who would rather skip towing on I-68's mountain grades. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at popular spots like New Germany State Park, Deep Creek Lake State Park, or even a private site near the Casselman River. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this. Pro tip: ask about delivery to Deep Creek Lake State Park, just a short drive south.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/deepcreeklake.aspxHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Grantsville?
Most Grantsville RV hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance, and some even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for road-trippers. From Grantsville, you're about 20 miles to Deep Creek Lake, 30 miles to Ohiopyle State Park in Pennsylvania, 45 miles to the Flight 93 National Memorial, roughly 140 miles to Pittsburgh, and about 175 miles to Washington, DC. Each listing shows the mileage policy clearly before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: message the host directly through the listing if you're planning a longer Appalachian loop, they will often add extra miles for a small per-mile fee that's cheaper than booking a bigger package.
nps.gov/flni/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Grantsville, MD?
You're spoiled for choice with RV camping Grantsville options, all set in the Appalachian highlands above 2,000 feet. New Germany State Park, a short drive south, offers wooded sites with electric hookups around a small swimming lake. Big Run State Park sits along the Savage River Reservoir for paddle-in kayaking. Savage River State Forest offers more rustic, spread-out sites for true peace and quiet. Deep Creek Lake State Park, about 20 miles south, rounds out the options with lakeside camping. Pro tip: for the easiest first-night arrival on your Grantsville RV trip, choose a campground close to I-68 so you can settle in before exploring deeper into Garrett County.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/newgermany.aspxWhen is the best time of year for a Grantsville RV trip?
Grantsville's mountain climate gives you three standout seasons. Late May through early July brings lush green forests and daytime highs in the 70s, perfect for hiking and paddling. Mid-September through mid-October is the showstopper, with vibrant fall foliage across the Appalachian ridges and crisp 60-degree days. July and August are warm but rarely sticky, with highs around 75 to 82F thanks to the 2,300-plus foot elevation, often noticeably cooler than Baltimore. Winter is genuinely snowy with sub-freezing nights, which is part of why Grantsville hosts some of Maryland's only true snow-country adventures. Pro tip: book your October foliage trip by July, it's the most popular week of the year.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through how to operate slide-outs, hookups, the generator, the water system, and propane. You can also message the host with questions before you book. For an extra-easy first trip in Grantsville, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a travel trailer delivered straight to a campground like New Germany State Park, so you're not towing through I-68's mountain curves. RVezy support is available throughout your trip. Pro tip: arrive at pickup with a 30-minute buffer so you can take your time with the walkthrough.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Grantsville RV trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 219 or a battery issue at New Germany State Park is just a phone call away from help. Common services include tire changes, jump starts, lockout help, and fuel delivery. Cell coverage can get spotty in Savage River State Forest and along deeper Appalachian backroads, so screenshot the RVezy support number before you head into the woods. Pro tip: keep the host's phone number handy too, they know their rig better than anyone and can often troubleshoot small quirks in minutes, getting you back to enjoying Deep Creek Lake fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trips from Grantsville, MD?
Grantsville is a phenomenal launchpad for an RV road trip into three states. Head about 20 miles south to Deep Creek Lake for swimming and Swallow Falls State Park's Muddy Creek Falls. Drive 30 miles north into Pennsylvania for Ohiopyle State Park and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Cruise about 45 miles to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville. For a bigger loop, head 140 miles to Pittsburgh or 175 miles to Washington, DC. Travel into Pennsylvania and West Virginia is fine on your rental, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy bookings. Pro tip: combine Ohiopyle and Fallingwater into one perfect day trip from your Garrett County basecamp.
nps.gov/frhi/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Grantsville RV trip?
Fuel is one of your most predictable expenses. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers tow at around 10 to 14 MPG behind a truck, and campervans (Class B) often hit 18 to 22 MPG. Maryland gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and Grantsville sits right off I-68 Exit 19, where you'll find truck-friendly fueling stations. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop around Deep Creek Lake and Ohiopyle in a Class C, plan on roughly $80 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Grantsville before heading deep into Savage River State Forest, where stations get sparse fast.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Grantsville?
For the best campgrounds near Grantsville, book early, especially for state parks. Maryland State Parks like New Germany and Big Run accept reservations well in advance through the official Maryland DNR reservation system, and prime summer weekends plus October foliage weeks fill quickly after opening. Private parks take direct bookings online and can sometimes accommodate shorter notice. For July 4th, Labor Day, and peak fall color (typically the second and third weekends of October), aim to book 6 to 9 months out. Pro tip: midweek arrivals are far easier to score and often quieter, perfect for that mountain serenity you came to Garrett County for.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Reservations.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Grantsville?
Driving an RV around Grantsville is very manageable with a little awareness. I-68 runs right through town with wide lanes and gradual mountain grades, which is great for motorhomes. Backroads like Route 495 and Route 219 wind through the Appalachians with some steeper hills and sharp curves, so take them slow. Winter brings real snow at this 2,300-foot elevation, and Maryland's Department of Transportation plows I-68 reliably but secondary roads can be icy December through March. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round. Pro tip: download offline maps before your trip, since cell coverage drops in Savage River State Forest and on smaller Garrett County roads.
chart.maryland.gov/What hookups and amenities will I find at Grantsville campgrounds?
You'll find a good mix. Most private campgrounds near Grantsville offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer). State park campgrounds such as New Germany typically have electric-only sites, with central dump stations and potable water fill points on site. Showers and flush toilets are standard at developed parks. Many sites are gravel pads, so bring leveling blocks for the rolling Appalachian terrain. The closest reliable dump station to downtown Grantsville is at New Germany State Park. Pro tip: top off freshwater before heading into Savage River State Forest, where sites are rustic and hookup-free.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/newgermany.aspxWhat's inside a typical Grantsville RV rental?
Today's rentals are basically tiny mountain cabins on wheels. A typical motorhome rental in Grantsville comes with real beds (often a queen plus bunks or a convertible dinette), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for safe family travel. Most have a TV, and many include a generator for off-grid power at places like Savage River State Forest. Wi-Fi varies by host, and you'll want to plan for spotty cell signal in the deeper woods. Pro tip: ask your host if the rig has a heated underbelly, it's a real plus for chilly Garrett County spring and fall nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Grantsville,%20MarylandWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Grantsville area offer some genuinely useful add-ons. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits, generator hours, outdoor camp chairs and tables, bike racks, and propane top-offs. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting point near I-68 Exit 19, and many offer delivery to local campgrounds like Deep Creek Lake State Park for a flat fee based on distance. Mileage policies and pet fees are set by each host and clearly displayed on every listing. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a linen kit often costs less than you'd think and turns your campervan rental Grantsville into a near-zero-effort vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Grantsville,%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash or paper checks change hands with the host. You pay your trip total online when you book, which locks in your dates. A refundable security deposit is held separately before your trip starts and released back to your card after a smooth return. The deposit amount is set per listing and clearly shown before you book. To avoid any issues at return, take quick photos of the RV at pickup and dropoff, return with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and follow the host's dump-station instructions. Pro tip: stop at the New Germany State Park dump station before returning your rig to Grantsville.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available in Grantsville during winter?
Yes, and winter is an underrated time to rent an RV in Grantsville. At 2,300-plus feet, this corner of Maryland gets real snow, with average January highs in the low 30s and overnight lows in the teens, perfect for a cozy snow-country basecamp near Wisp Resort's ski slopes at Deep Creek Lake. Look for four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and reliable shore power for hookups. Many hosts only run their rigs spring through fall, so use the date filter to see what's available. Pro tip: book a delivery-and-setup rental at a winter-accessible site and let the host handle the cold-weather hookups for you.
