Campgrounds and RV parks near Piney Point, MD

Water dominates the itinerary. Fishing, crabbing, kayaking, and boating are the core activities on both sides of the Potomac, with public launches at Point Lookout State Park and boat access at Belle Isle State Park. Point Lookout offers fishing from a 710-foot fishing pier, along with shoreline access, beaches, and picnic areas. History is close at hand. The park also includes the preserved site of a Civil War prison camp, the Point Lookout Lighthouse, a large campground, boat launch facilities, and fishing and crabbing piers. Historic St. Mary's City, St. Clements Island, and the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum are within a short drive of Take It Easy Campground. For families, expect a seasonal swimming pool at Take It Easy, a universal-access playground, boardwalk and fishing pier at Belle Isle, and strong bird-watching that includes bald eagles and osprey.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the weather is warm, water access is fully open, and family programming is in full swing. Point Lookout is a very popular park in the summer, where day-use areas fill to capacity on most weekends. Booking campsites well in advance is essential for holiday windows. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler, with active fishing, migrating waterfowl, and open trails. Belle Isle's full-service campground operates seasonally from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December; Brewer's Point primitive camping is available year-round. Winter narrows the options. Many amenities scale back, and Point Lookout runs reduced office hours from November through March with some facilities closed, and some facilities have limited operations prior to Memorial Day weekend and after Labor Day weekend. A full-hookup loop stays open year-round at Point Lookout for self-contained campers. Private parks such as Take It Easy operate year-round, but pools and seasonal programming close after summer. Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August and September and can affect the lower Potomac.

This is a rural, waterfront region. Cell coverage is generally solid near towns but can dip on remote peninsulas, and Wi-Fi is not guaranteed at state park sites. At Belle Isle, the visitor center has Wi-Fi, but the campground and Bel Air area do not. Rigs of most sizes are workable. Belle Isle's full-service campground offers 28 sites with electric (20/30/50-amp) and water hookups, and sites accommodate everything from tents to RVs up to 45 feet in length. Point Lookout has 26 sites with full hookups plus additional electric-only sites, with a full-hookup Tulip loop for self-contained campers. Take It Easy handles pop-ups through big rigs across its 242 sites. Expect summer humidity, mosquitoes near marshes, and thunderstorms. Dogs are welcome in designated areas at most parks, and approximately 240 acres at Point Lookout are set aside for deer hunting (bow, muzzle loader, and shotgun), so check park notices before hiking off-trail in late fall and winter.
