Campgrounds and RV parks near Princess Anne, MD

Paddling is the signature activity. More than 30 miles of marked water trails dissect a 2,900 acre Chesapeake Bay salt marsh island at Janes Island State Park, and most of the waterways are protected from wind and current, providing ideal conditions for the novice as well as the experienced paddler. The Pocomoke River near Shad Landing offers flatwater kayaking under a bald cypress canopy. Fishing, crabbing, and boat launches sit at Roaring Point Waterfront Campground and along the Manokin and Wicomico rivers. Anglers at Janes Island enjoy easy access to the Bay and fish for striped bass, spot, croaker, flounder and bluefish, and crabbing is a family favorite. Lake Somerset Campground draws anglers to its freshwater lake. Inland, day trips reach Assateague Island National Seashore for wild ponies and Atlantic surf, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia, and the waterman town of Crisfield for ferries to Smith and Tangier islands.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall, though a few loops stay open year-round. At Janes Island State Park, sites 48-51 operate year-round while the remaining sites are seasonal from late March through late November. At Shad Landing, Acorn Trail, Robin's Nest, and Water's Edge loops operate year-round, while Blue Heron, Deer Run, and Fox Den have seasonal availability from spring through fall. Private parks such as Lake Somerset Campground, Sandy Hill Family Camp, and Roaring Point Waterfront Campground generally operate on similar spring-to-fall schedules. Summer is peak. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day book out weeks in advance, and biting insects including greenhead flies, mosquitoes, and ticks are prevalent during summer months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and active migratory bird traffic along the Atlantic Flyway. Atlantic tropical systems can affect the region from August through October, occasionally forcing site closures or evacuations on the Chesapeake side.

Terrain is flat and low elevation, with sites split between wooded loops, open grassy fields, and waterfront pads. Full hookups are common at private parks; state park loops more often offer electric and water only, with a central dump station. Janes Island accommodates RVs up to 30 feet with electric, water, and sewer hookups available. Mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies are a real factor near the marsh from late spring through early fall. Bring repellent, screen rooms, and long sleeves for dusk. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Princess Anne and Salisbury but can drop off in the marshes around Janes Island State Park. Groceries, propane, laundromats, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Salisbury, about twenty minutes north. Crisfield and Pocomoke City cover basic provisioning closer to the water.
