Campgrounds near Arlington, Massachusetts
Arlington sits just northwest of Boston, placing campers within roughly an hour of two very different systems: the wooded state forests north of the city and the island campsites of Boston Harbor. Both are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), which sets shared reservation rules, seasonal windows, and firewood restrictions across its properties.
The closest full-service option is Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, located about 20 miles north of Boston within more than 3,000 acres of hardwood, hemlock and white pine forest, with 91 campsites. Eleven sites offer 20/30/50 AMP hookups, making it the most practical base for RV travellers in the Arlington area.
On the water side, overnight camping in the Boston Harbor Islands is available only on Peddocks Island, and is no longer offered on Bumpkin, Grape, or Lovells Islands. Grape Island and Bumpkin Island remain popular day-trip destinations by ferry, and Thompson Island (now Cathleen Stone Island) is used primarily for education programs.
Things to do near Arlington
At Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, recreational opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, horseback riding and picnicking, with rolling hills, small ponds and rock outcrops spread across the forest. The trail network and stocked ponds make it a workable base for families with kids and dogs.
On the harbor, Peddocks Island layers history with beach walking. The island features wooded campsites, miles of trails, and scenic beaches, plus a Civil War-era fort complex at Fort Andrews. Bumpkin, Grape and Peddocks all lie within paddling distance of the South Shore towns of Hull, Hingham and Quincy, opening up day-paddling and shore fishing for striped bass and bluefish.
Arlington itself sits along the Minuteman Bikeway and Spy Pond, with quick transit access into downtown Boston.

The camping season is short and clearly defined. At Harold Parker State Forest, the camping season typically runs from early May to Columbus Day weekend. The Boston Harbor Islands 2026 camping season runs from June 17 through October 12, with sites available Wednesday through Saturday nights through Labor Day (September 7), and Thursday through Saturday nights through fall until Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Summer weekends fill fastest, and midweek stays generally offer better availability and a quieter experience. Fall brings cooler nights and foliage across the state forests north of Boston, while shoulder-season island trips depend heavily on ferry schedules and weather.
Winter is off-season for tent and RV camping in eastern Massachusetts. Services are limited and the islands are largely inaccessible in cold weather. Occasional coastal storms and Nor'easters also shape late-fall and early-spring trip planning.

We had an amazing trip to Cape Cod. AR was very helpful and communicative prior to the trip and on arrival for pick up. The RV was great for our family of 4. It was very clean and felt new.

We had a fabulous time in this great camper! AR was so easy to communicate with, answered our questions and was very flexible with our plans. We will definitely be planning something in the future with this great camper, my grandkids loved it. A great family experience!

How to book
Both nearby DCR properties use the same reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 4 months prior to the arrival date, and reservations are required with no walk-in camping allowed. Bookings go through the Massachusetts DCR portal on ReserveAmerica.
For Peddocks Island, ferry passage is a separate step. Ferry capacities are limited, and campers are strongly encouraged to book ferry passage immediately after making their camping reservation. The ferry to Peddocks Island leaves from Hingham Shipyard, and there is no direct service from Boston to Peddocks Island.
A few rules that catch first-time DCR campers: reservations must be in the name of the primary occupant, who is at least 18 years of age, and a photo ID matching the name on the reservation is required at check-in. Massachusetts also prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so firewood must be purchased on site.
What to expect on arrival
Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is the more conventional RV experience. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring and pedestal grill, a water spigot is located on each campsite, a dumping station is available, and the comfort stations have showers and flush toilets. The campground address is 133 Jenkins Road, Andover, MA.
The Boston Harbor Islands are the opposite: rustic and largely pack-in, pack-out. Composting toilets are provided at each campground, with flush toilets and two showers at the Peddocks Visitor Center near the ferry dock. Campers should bring one gallon of water per person per day, and everything carried in must be carried out. Pets are not permitted on Boston Harbor Islands, so travellers with dogs should plan on Harold Parker instead.
Both systems prohibit alcohol in state campgrounds and cap tent-site occupancy at four adults or two adults with dependent children.
