Campgrounds near Belmont, Massachusetts
Belmont sits inside Route 128 just west of Cambridge, so there is no campground within town limits. RV travelers base out of state forests north and south of Boston and reach the city by car or commuter rail. The closest developed option with hookups is Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, located roughly 20 miles north of Boston across more than 3,000 acres of hardwood, hemlock, and white pine forest.
A more unusual option lies in Boston Harbor itself. The Boston Harbor Islands park includes 34 islands and peninsulas spread over 50 square miles just offshore. Camping is available only on Peddocks Island, Wednesday through Sunday, from mid-June through mid-October. Camping is not offered on Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island, or Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island, which are day-use only for general visitors, and Bumpkin and Grape are currently closed for facility maintenance.
Because the harbor islands are tent and yurt sites reached by ferry, RV renters typically park the coach at Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park and treat the islands as a day trip or overnight side-adventure without the rig.
Things to do near Belmont
From a base at Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, families get direct access to hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, hunting, horseback riding, and picnicking inside the forest, plus an easy drive to Salem, Plum Island, and the North Shore beaches.
Belmont itself is a short drive from the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park, and the museums of the Emerald Necklace. For a car-free day out, park at Hingham Shipyard and ride the ferry to the harbor islands, where visitors can walk a Civil War-era fort, visit historic lighthouses, explore tide pools, hike trails, fish, picnic, or swim.
Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island, and Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island each carry their own trail networks and history stops for a day off the RV, subject to seasonal closures on some islands.

The camping season in eastern Massachusetts is short and shoulder-heavy. The Harold Parker camping season typically runs from early May to Columbus Day weekend, which lines up with when the harbor islands open. Peddocks Island runs from mid-June through mid-October, with sites available Wednesday through Saturday nights during summer until Labor Day, then Thursday through Saturday nights through Indigenous Peoples' Day.
July and August are peak season. Weekends at Lorraine Park and Peddocks fill first, and ferry seats to the islands sell out well before campsites do. Late June and September tend to be the sweet spot for RV travelers: warm days, cooler nights, fewer bugs, and better site selection.
Winter is off-season for camping in the Boston area. State forest campgrounds are closed, ferries do not run to the islands, and RVers passing through use private parks or driveway stays. Spring brings mud season and variable weather into May before the state forest reopens for the summer schedule.

We had an amazing trip to Cape Cod. AR was very helpful and communicative prior to the trip and on arrival for pick up. The RV was great for our family of 4. It was very clean and felt new.

How to book campgrounds near Belmont
Reservations at Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park can be made up to 4 months prior to arrival date, and reservations with departure dates outside that 4-month window cannot be changed or cancelled until 18 days after the reservation was made. Reservations are required and no walk-in camping is allowed. Booking runs through the Massachusetts DCR ReserveAmerica portal.
Peddocks Island uses the same DCR ReserveAmerica system, with reservations available 4 months in advance of check-in. Campers should book the ferry immediately after the site: ferry capacities are limited, and campers are strongly encouraged to book ferry passage right after making the camping reservation.
For the 11 electric sites at Lorraine Park, set an alarm for the release date. Those sites turn over within minutes for summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Lorraine Park is a wooded state-forest campground, not a resort. The 91 campsites are spread out to provide a real forest camping experience; each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and pedestal grill; every site has a water spigot; eleven sites offer 20/30/50 amp electric hookups; comfort stations have showers and flush toilets; and a dumping station is available for campers only. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds, and hunting is permitted in season, so check dates if traveling with kids or dogs.
The harbor islands are primitive by comparison. Amenities are limited to composting toilets on the islands, with flush toilets and two showers at the Peddocks Visitor Center; fresh water is only available on Peddocks Island; campers must bring one gallon of water per person per day and plan to carry everything in and out. Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so buy it on site.
