Campgrounds and RV parks near Chelsea, MA

Chelsea sits directly across the Mystic River from downtown Boston, placing RV renters within a short drive of both urban attractions and the region's most distinctive camping options. The area offers two very different overnight experiences: island tent sites and yurts in Boston Harbor, and full-service state forest camping to the north. The closest designated camping is on the Boston Harbor Islands, reached by ferry from Hingham Shipyard. Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park offers overnight stays on Peddocks Island, featuring wooded campsites, miles of trails, and scenic beaches. Island sites are tent and yurt only, not RV-accessible, so RV renters typically park at the mainland ferry terminal in Hingham and pack in gear. For RV camping proper, Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park is the practical choice. Located about 20 miles north of Boston across more than 3,000 acres of hardwood, hemlock and white pine forest, this state campground has 91 sites, a dump station, and eleven sites with electric hookups within roughly a 30-minute drive of Chelsea.

Both Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park and the Peddocks Island sites in Boston Harbor Islands are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and booked through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 4 months prior to the arrival date. Walk-in registrations are not permitted; advance reservations can be made same day up until 2 pm on the date of arrival. For Peddocks, book the round-trip park ferry from Hingham Shipyard immediately after locking in the campsite, as ferry capacity is limited and sells out separately. There is no direct camping ferry from downtown Boston to Peddocks. For RV travelers, Harold Parker Lorraine Park is the only nearby site with hookups. Eleven campsites have 20/30/50 AMP electrical hookups. Reserve those first if power matters.
