Campgrounds near Great Barrington
Great Barrington sits in the southern Berkshires of western Massachusetts, with the Housatonic River running through town and thousands of acres of state forest within a short drive. RV travelers have a mix of options nearby, from primitive state-forest sites to full-hookup family resorts across the New York and Connecticut borders.
Beartown State Forest is a primitive campground offering flushable toilets and access to fresh water but no showers, with twelve campsites equipped with a fire ring, food storage locker and picnic table, and no hookups or dumping facilities. October Mountain campground includes 44 campsites and three yurts with a three-tiered layout, and at 17,000 acres, October Mountain is the largest state forest in Massachusetts, with easy access to Tanglewood and other Central Berkshires attractions.
For full-hookup RV travel, Spacious Skies Woodland Hills sits just over the New York line, and Waubeeka Family Campground and Lone Oak Camp Sites round out the family-resort options within about an hour's drive.
Things to do around Great Barrington
The Berkshires deliver a dense mix of outdoor and cultural stops. Hiking trails are available for every level of experience, and include the famous Appalachian Trail, which crosses through October Mountain State Forest. One of the most scenic trails leads through Schermerhorn Gorge, a striking natural feature which has intrigued generations of geologists.
Benedict Pond in Beartown State Forest is a shallow 35-acre man-made pond and a swimming, paddling, and fishing draw for families. The area offers a variety of outdoor recreation including boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, OHVing, picnicking and wildlife viewing, plus cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling during the winter season.
Off the trail, downtown Great Barrington offers restaurants and shops, and Tanglewood in Lenox is the region's marquee summer music venue.

Camping season in the Berkshires is short and defined. Visitors may only camp in designated campsites at October Mountain, and only during camping season, from mid-May through mid-October. RV camping sites do not have electricity, and campers can expect basic amenities including picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms, with a 14-day maximum stay between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Summer is peak season for family camping and cultural events, and weekends fill quickly. Fall brings cooler nights and heavy foliage traffic through late September into mid-October, so early booking is essential.
Winter closes most public campgrounds in the region, though the state forests remain open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. At Lone Oak Camp Sites, reservations are taken year-round, camping season April 15 through October 15, which is typical for private parks in the area.
How to book near Great Barrington
Massachusetts DCR campgrounds are booked through ReserveAmerica up to four months in advance of the arrival date. Reservations are available for DCR's 25 campgrounds beginning in April and running through October. Same-day camping is available until 2 p.m. through ReserveAmerica, but DCR cannot accept walk-in camping.
Beartown reopened in 2024 after a multi-year renovation, so availability can be tight. Private parks like Spacious Skies Woodland Hills, Waubeeka Family Campground, and Lone Oak Camp Sites book directly through their own websites, and summer weekends often sell out weeks in advance.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, hilly terrain and variable cell coverage. There are no hookups or dumping facilities at Beartown, and cell service is limited at this location. October Mountain campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, trash collection and an RV dump station, with firewood available for sale from the camp host, and campsites can accommodate tents, trailers and RVs up to 34 feet.
Bear activity is a real consideration. Black bears can visit these campgrounds, so keep all food, coolers, cooking supplies and equipment in the food storage lockers provided, and do not keep food or toiletries in your tent or camper.
Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and firewood must be purchased at the campground. Private parks such as Spacious Skies Woodland Hills offer full hookups, pools, and camp stores for a more resort-style stay.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Great%20Barrington,%20MassachusettsWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Great Barrington?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Great Barrington. Massachusetts does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers booked on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association. Most first-time renters in the Berkshires are surprised how simple the process is: you book online and drive away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something happens during the trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Great Barrington includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Mohawk Trail with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, which is especially reassuring on the winding mountain roads around Beartown State Forest. You choose the level of coverage during checkout (RVezy offers multiple protection tiers), so you can match it to your trip and comfort level. Pro tip: pick a higher tier if you are planning a longer Berkshires RV trip with multiple campgrounds, the extra peace of mind is worth it.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy for every rental. That means you get a consistent, renter-friendly experience whether you are booking a campervan rental Great Barrington locals recommend or a big Class A for a family reunion. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and if your host cancels you are refunded or offered credits. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best rigs for Tanglewood weekends, the cancellation policy is not displayed in individual listings but the full details are available on the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Great Barrington RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Great Barrington options are easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you will see rigs whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). The Berkshires are a dream for dog-loving travelers: leashed pups are welcome on the Appalachian Trail crossings near Jug End, on the Housatonic River Walk in downtown Great Barrington, and throughout Beartown State Forest. Many local restaurants on Railroad Street have dog-friendly patios too. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed/size notes, then plan a stop at Lake Mansfield for a swim break your dog will love.
mass.gov/info-details/dogs-in-massachusetts-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in the Berkshires?
Yes, RV delivery Great Barrington is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will drive the rig directly to your campground (think Beartown State Forest, Prospect Mountain Campground in Granville, or Bonnie Brae in Lenox), level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into tight forest sites, and no stress on Route 7 or Route 23. Filter by Delivery on the listing page to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: delivery is especially handy for Tanglewood weekends, you can park the RV nearby and enjoy the concerts car-free.
mass.gov/locations/beartown-state-forestHow many miles do I get with my rental, and how far can I realistically drive?
Mileage on RVezy is set by each host, and many Great Barrington listings include a generous daily allowance, while a few even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Great Barrington you can comfortably reach most classic New England destinations in a day: Boston is about 135 miles east (roughly 2.5 hours), New York City is 120 miles south (about 2.5 hours), Lake George NY is about 90 miles north, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are about 220 miles. Acadia National Park in Maine is a longer 350-mile haul. Pro tip: check the mileage cap on each listing before booking and ask the host about overage rates, it is the easiest way to keep your RV road trip from Great Barrington on budget.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Great%20Barrington,%20MassachusettsWhere are the best campgrounds near Great Barrington?
The Berkshires have some genuinely wonderful campgrounds within a 30-minute drive of town. Beartown State Forest in Monterey (about 7 miles east) offers wooded sites near Benedict Pond with hiking and swimming. Prospect Mountain Campground in Granville is a big-rig-friendly favorite with full hookups. Bonnie Brae Cabins & Campsites in Lenox is great for families heading to Tanglewood. Across the New York border, Taconic State Park's Copake Falls Area sits near Bash Bish Falls. October Mountain State Forest in Lee is the largest state forest in Massachusetts with quiet, shaded sites. Pro tip: Massachusetts state campgrounds book through ReserveAmerica, and the best sites for July weekends are often gone six months out.
mass.gov/info-details/camping-on-dcr-propertiesWhen is the best time to visit Great Barrington in an RV?
Great Barrington shines from late May through mid-October, with each season offering something different. Summer (June through August) brings warm days in the high 70s to low 80s, perfect for Tanglewood, swimming at Lake Mansfield, and tubing the Housatonic. September and early October are arguably the best window: cool nights in the 40s, sunny 65 to 70 degree days, and the Berkshires put on one of the most spectacular foliage shows in the country. Spring (May) is quiet and budget-friendly with everything blooming. Pro tip: target the last weekend of September through mid-October for peak fall color, and book your RV camping Great Barrington trip at least two months ahead because leaf-peepers fill up campgrounds fast.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Is Great Barrington a good place to start?
It really is, and you are in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump procedures, so you are never left guessing. Great Barrington is a fantastic spot for first time renting an RV because the roads around town (Route 7, Route 23, Route 41) are well-maintained, scenic, and rarely congested outside of festival weekends. Most nearby campgrounds have pull-through sites that are forgiving for beginners. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they drive much like a large van, and ask your host to record a short video of the walkthrough so you can rewatch it at the campsite.
rvezy.com/blog/rv-rental-tips-for-first-timersWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Great Barrington includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Mass Pike or a generator hiccup at Beartown State Forest is just one phone call away from a fix. Your host is also your direct lifeline (they know their rig best) and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after the trip. Cell coverage in the southern Berkshires is solid along Route 7 and in downtown Great Barrington, though it can get spotty deep in October Mountain State Forest. Pro tip: save the roadside number, your host's number, and RVezy support in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Great Barrington RV rental into New York, Vermont, or Connecticut?
Most hosts happily allow travel across nearby state lines, which is great because Great Barrington sits just 6 miles from the New York border and under an hour from Connecticut and Vermont. Popular cross-state routes include the drive up Route 7 to Manchester VT (about 75 miles), west to the Hudson Valley wineries (45 miles), and south to Litchfield Hills CT (35 miles). Canada is technically reachable but a much longer haul (Montreal is roughly 250 miles), and trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm out-of-state plans, then build a classic New England RV road trip from Great Barrington through three states in a week.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Berkshires RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier expenses to plan for. Massachusetts gas prices typically run close to the national average, and the Berkshires have plenty of stations along Route 7 (Stockbridge, Lee, Sheffield) and on Route 23 toward the Mass Pike. Realistic mileage: campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes 6 to 9 MPG. For a 4-day, 300-mile Berkshires loop in a Class C, expect roughly $120 to $180 in gas. Pro tip: fuel up in Sheffield or at the Pittsfield Costco before heading deep into the hills, prices in smaller mountain towns like Otis or Monterey can run 20 to 40 cents higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground in the Berkshires?
For the smoothest trip, book campgrounds as soon as your RV rental is confirmed. Massachusetts state campgrounds like October Mountain State Forest open reservations six months out through ReserveAmerica, and prime July and August weekend sites often sell out the day they open. Private campgrounds like Prospect Mountain in Granville and Bonnie Brae in Lenox take direct bookings and fill up fast around Tanglewood season (late June through early September) and peak foliage (late September to mid-October). Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Thursday) almost always have openings even in summer, so build a Tuesday-to-Friday Berkshires RV trip if you want flexibility and lower rates.
reserveamerica.com/explore/massachusetts/r/campingWhat are the roads like around Great Barrington for driving an RV?
You are in luck, the southern Berkshires are some of the most RV-friendly roads in New England. Route 7 (the main north-south corridor through town), Route 23 east toward the Mass Pike, and Route 41 south to Connecticut are all wide, well-paved, and gently graded. There are no low bridges or weight restrictions on these primary routes for standard RVs. A few back roads up into Beartown and Mount Washington State Forest get narrow and twisty, so larger Class A motorhomes should stick to numbered highways. Winter (December through March) brings snow and ice, so most renters travel May through October. Pro tip: avoid Route 7 through Stockbridge between 4 and 6 PM on summer Fridays, that is when New York weekenders pour in.
mass.gov/orgs/highway-divisionWhat amenities will I find at Berkshires campgrounds, and where do I dump and refill?
Berkshires campgrounds range from full-service resorts to rustic state forest sites, so there is something for every comfort level. Prospect Mountain Campground and Bonnie Brae offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Massachusetts state campgrounds like Beartown and October Mountain provide potable water spigots, flush toilets, and hot showers, with a central dump station on-site though most individual sites are non-hookup. For dumping mid-trip, Prospect Mountain Campground offers dump services for a small fee. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's driveway and top off again at the campground spigot, water pressure varies in older Berkshires parks.
mass.gov/info-details/camping-on-dcr-propertiesWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Great Barrington?
More than most people expect. A typical motorhome rental Great Barrington listing comes fully equipped: a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Most include a generator or solar setup for off-grid stays, and many have a TV with DVD or streaming options. Wi-Fi is sometimes included via a hotspot, though cell signal varies in deeper Berkshires hollows. Pro tip: read the listing's amenities list carefully and message the host about anything important (like a specific bed configuration for kids), Great Barrington hosts are known for being quick to respond and helpful.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Great%20Barrington,%20MassachusettsWhat add-ons and pickup options do Great Barrington hosts typically offer?
Lots, and they make trips smoother. Common add-ons on RVezy listings around Great Barrington include linens and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, bike racks, camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits (perfect for chilly Berkshires nights), generators, and pet packages. Many hosts offer delivery within a 30 to 50 mile radius for a per-mile fee, which covers most of Berkshire County and into Columbia County NY. Mileage policies vary by host (typically 100 to 150 free miles per night), with options to prepay more upfront at a discount. Pro tip: bundle linens and a kitchen kit on your first trip, you will save a Costco run and have everything you need waiting in the RV when you pick up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Great%20Barrington,%20MassachusettsHow does the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Great Barrington?
It is straightforward and built to protect both you and the host. When you book on RVezy, payment is handled securely through the platform, so you never hand cash to a host. A refundable security deposit is placed on your card (the amount varies by RV) and released back to you after the trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape with the agreed fuel and tank levels. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and return, inside and out, including the odometer, fuel gauge, and waste tanks. Five minutes of documentation is the single best way to keep your RV rental Massachusetts experience smooth and your deposit fully refunded.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Great Barrington in winter for skiing?
Yes, and it can be a magical Berkshires adventure. Winter RV rentals in Great Barrington are available from select hosts whose rigs are four-season ready with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and strong furnaces, perfect for ski trips to Butternut, Catamount, Bousquet, or Jiminy Peak. Temperatures from December through March often dip into the teens and 20s, with average snowfall of 60 to 80 inches, so you will want full hookups (especially shore power) at a winter-open campground or a private host driveway. Pro tip: filter listings for four-season RVs and book delivery directly to a ski resort lot or rental cabin driveway, you will skip the cold-weather setup and walk straight to the lifts in the morning.
