Camping near Medford, Massachusetts
Medford sits just north of Boston along the Mystic River, giving RV renters quick access to two very different camping systems: the state-run inland forests north of the city and the Boston Harbor Islands offshore. There is no drive-in RV campground inside Medford itself, so most travelers base out of parks within a short drive up I-93 or park the rig and ferry out to a harbor island for a tent night.
The closest developed campground with RV hookups is Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park, roughly 20 miles north in Andover. It sits inside a state forest of hardwood, hemlock, and white pine, with 91 sites, a picnic table, fire ring, and water spigot at each, plus eleven sites with 20/30/50 amp electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, and an RV dump station.
Offshore options are tent-only and reached by ferry. Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island offers tent sites and yurts within the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park. Boston Harbor Islands - Thompson Island, Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island, and Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island are day-use islands in the same park system, useful for hiking and picnicking on the trip.
Things to do around Medford
The Boston Harbor Islands are the headline attraction. Ferries from Long Wharf and Hingham Shipyard serve islands including Georges, Spectacle, Peddocks, Grape, Bumpkin, Lovells, and Thompson, with hiking trails, a Civil War-era fort at Georges, tide pools, swimming beaches, and picnic areas. Boston Harbor Islands - Grape Island and Boston Harbor Islands - Bumpkin Island are quieter day-trip options with rustic trails and shoreline views.
Inland, Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park sits within a state forest of more than 3,000 acres, with over 35 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, plus ponds for fishing and non-motorized boating. Medford itself puts renters within about 20 minutes of downtown Boston, the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park, and the museums in the Fenway and Seaport districts, making the rig a practical base for a mix of city and outdoor days.

The camping calendar in eastern Massachusetts is short and weather-driven. Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park runs from early May through Columbus Day weekend, with reservations required and walk-in camping not permitted. Late in the season the schedule tightens: in mid to late October the park is open only Thursday through Sunday before closing for winter.
Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island camping runs from mid-June through mid-October, with campgrounds available Wednesday through Saturday nights through the Labor Day summer season, then Thursday through Saturday nights through the fall season until Indigenous Peoples' Day. Public ferries to the islands generally operate from May through October, so off-season visits require a private boat.
Summer is peak season, drawing Boston-area families and out-of-state renters, so weekend sites at Lorraine Park and Peddocks yurts fill months out. Late September and early October bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and New England foliage across the inland forests, and are often the most comfortable window for RV travel.

We had an amazing trip to Cape Cod. AR was very helpful and communicative prior to the trip and on arrival for pick up. The RV was great for our family of 4. It was very clean and felt new.

How to book
Massachusetts state campgrounds, including Harold Parker State Forest Lorraine Park and Boston Harbor Islands - Peddocks Island, are booked through the Massachusetts DCR system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to four months in advance of the arrival date, meaning campers planning to arrive on August 12 can book on April 12. Same-day camping is available online until 2 p.m. Walk-ups are not permitted.
Peddocks Island requires a second booking: a round-trip ferry ticket from Hingham purchased separately, with limited space capacity on the ferries, so campers are urged to reserve the ferry when making their camping reservation.
A few rules apply system-wide. DCR requires leashed pets to have rabies certificates, and pets are not allowed in cabins, yurts, or on beaches. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds. Massachusetts also prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground.
What to expect
Lorraine Park is the practical choice for RV renters. Each of the 91 sites has a picnic table, fire ring with pedestal grill, and individual water spigot, with 11 sites offering 20/30/50 amp electrical hookups. Comfort stations have flush toilets and hot showers, and an RV dump station is on site. Sites are wooded and reasonably separated, though some approaches are hilly.
The Boston Harbor Islands are a very different experience and are not suitable for the RV itself. Campers park at the Hingham ferry terminal, then carry gear onto the boat. Peddocks Island has yurts and site-specific tent sites reservable in advance, with potable water for drinking but no showers on the campsites themselves. Flush toilets and two showers are available to campers on the lower level of the Visitor's Center, a short walk from most island campgrounds. Everything packed in must be packed out.
