Campgrounds near Northfield, Massachusetts
Northfield sits in the Pioneer Valley of north-central Massachusetts along the Connecticut River, near the New Hampshire and Vermont borders. The area draws RV travelers with a mix of state forest campgrounds, private family parks, and river-based recreation. Franklin County terrain runs from river bottomland to wooded hills, with elevations generally in the 200 to 600 foot range.
Campground options within roughly a 30-minute drive include Forest Lake Campgrounds, Erving State Forest, and Travelers Woods Of New England. Just across the state line in southern New Hampshire, Hinsdale Campground At Thicket Hill Village and Shir-Roy Camping Area extend the choices for RV renters willing to cross a short border hop.
Most regional campgrounds are seasonal, running from late spring through early October, aligning with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation calendar. RV renters should plan for a mix of full-hookup private parks and more rustic state-managed sites with limited or no hookups.
Things to do around Northfield
The Connecticut River is the region's centerpiece. The Northfield Mountain Recreation Area offers canoeing, kayaking, and upriver canoe shuttles from its Barton Cove recreation area, along with interpretive riverboat cruises on the Connecticut River. The same property maintains 26 miles of trails used for hiking and mountain biking in warm months and cross-country skiing in winter.
Erving State Forest, a short drive east, is built around Laurel Lake and offers a 27-site campground on a hillside above the lake, with swimming, boating, fishing, and a network of forest roads and hiking trails. Families staying at Forest Lake Campgrounds or Travelers Woods Of New England can also reach nearby state forests, farm stands, and small-town centers in Greenfield and Brattleboro within a short drive.

The primary RV camping season runs from late May through early October. Massachusetts DCR campgrounds, including Erving State Forest, typically operate seasonally from late May through early October, and most private parks in the area follow a similar calendar. Mid-June is a notable time at Erving State Forest, when the mountain laurels bloom across the hillside above Laurel Lake.
Summer brings warm, humid days and the region's busiest weekends, so waterfront sites near lakes and the Connecticut River book out first. Fall foliage from late September into mid-October is a major draw across Franklin County, and weekend availability tightens sharply during peak color. Nights cool quickly once October begins.
Winter camping is limited. Northfield has a humid continental climate with warm and humid summers and cold, snowy winters, and most local campgrounds close. Northfield Mountain still operates as a four-season recreation area, with its trail network shifting to cross-country skiing once snow arrives.
How to book a campsite near Northfield
Massachusetts state park campgrounds, including Erving State Forest, are booked through ReserveAmerica on the DCR reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 4 months prior to the arrival date, reservations are required, and no walk-in camping is allowed. The office telephone number at Erving State Forest is (978) 544-3939 for questions about site logistics.
Private campgrounds such as Forest Lake Campgrounds, Travelers Woods Of New England, Hinsdale Campground At Thicket Hill Village, and Shir-Roy Camping Area book directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and fall foliage dates, reserve well in advance; cancellations happen but are not reliable enough to plan around.
What to expect on-site
Hookup availability varies widely. Private parks in the area generally offer water and electric sites, with some full-hookup options suitable for larger rentals. State-managed sites at Erving State Forest have no RV hookups and no dump station, and the campground is only suitable for small trailers, popup campers, and campervans less than 14 feet long, so larger rigs should choose private campgrounds instead.
Cell service is effectively absent at Erving, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is recommended. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds. Black bears can be visitors to the campground and are wild and can be dangerous, so food and trash should be stored in the RV rather than left at the site.
