Campgrounds and RV parks near Amboy, MN

The headline attraction west of Mankato is Minneopa State Park. The park's centerpiece is Minneopa Falls, where water from the upper falls drops about 10 feet before tumbling another 39 feet down the lower falls into a gorge carved from sandstone. The park's Bison Drive lets visitors see a free-roaming herd from their vehicle, operating Thursday through Tuesday with seasonal hours. On park trails, families can hike prairie loops, visit the Seppmann stone wind mill, a 32-foot structure once used to grind wheat into flour, and picnic near the falls overlook. Additional recreation includes biking, horseshoes and volleyball, wildlife viewing for bald eagles, deer, and turkey, and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Off-park options include fishing local lakes, cycling rural county roads, and day trips into Mankato for groceries, laundry, and dump-station access.

The practical RV season in south-central Minnesota runs from late April into October. Camping season runs from spring through fall, with advance reservations recommended during peak months, and each season brings its own character: in spring, melted snow rushes over the lower falls and trails come alive. Overnight lows can still drop near freezing into May, so RV renters should confirm furnace propane and freshwater tank readiness before early-season trips. Summer is the peak window. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill first at state park sites, and holiday weekends often sell out at the 120-day booking horizon. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes, are heaviest in June and early July near wooded and river-bottom sites. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color through late September and early October. Minneopa State Park is open year round, and winter sports include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, though most private RV parks in the area close by late October and reopen in April.

Sites in the area lean rustic to semi-modern. Standard amenities at Minneopa include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and an RV dump station, with each campsite featuring a picnic table, fire ring with cooking grill, and a tent or RV pad. Only a handful of state park sites offer electric hookups, so renters relying on shore power should filter for electric sites when booking or plan on generator and battery use. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Amboy and Mankato but can weaken in river valleys and inside the park's wooded loops. Private parks in the area are more likely to offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Roads into local campgrounds are paved or well-maintained gravel and handle standard Class C and travel-trailer rentals without difficulty.
