Campgrounds and RV parks near Caledonia, MN

Beaver Creek Valley State Park is the headline draw, with trout fishing on East Beaver Creek, the Big Spring Trail along the water, and the steeper Hole-in-the-Rock Trail through the bluffs. Cell service inside the valley is limited, so visitors should download maps before arrival. The wider region is bicycle country: the Root River State Trail and Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail are within day-trip range and suit families with kids on hybrid bikes. The Mississippi River at Brownsville and the Army Corps lands along Pool 8 offer birding, especially during fall tundra-swan migration. Caledonia itself promotes a wild-turkey and quilting identity, and small-town cafes, the county fairgrounds, and short driving loops through Amish farm country round out a typical itinerary.

The practical RV season in southeast Minnesota runs roughly from mid-April through mid-October. Money Creek Haven Inc, for example, operates seasonally from about mid-April to mid-October, and other private parks in Houston County follow a similar pattern. Beaver Creek Valley State Park is open year-round, but services scale back sharply once water systems are winterized in late fall, and the park is closed during state deer hunts in November and December. Late spring brings the most variable conditions: wet trails, high creeks, and occasional severe thunderstorms moving through the Upper Mississippi Valley. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, frequent afternoon storms, and the heaviest demand on weekends and around the Fourth of July. Early fall is often the best window for RV travelers, with cooler nights, color in the bluffs, and lower bug pressure. Winter camping is limited to hardy state-park users; snow, ice, and subzero cold snaps make most private campgrounds impractical for rental RVs.

Sites in this region tend to be wooded and on uneven terrain, since the landscape is bluff and valley rather than open prairie. RV renters should plan for leveling blocks and expect some shaded sites with overhanging branches. Beaver Creek Valley State Park drive-in sites accommodate rigs up to about 55 feet, and several private parks in Houston County set similar length limits, so checking maximums before booking is wise. Hookup mixes vary: electric and water are common, while full hookups and pull-throughs are less universal. Cell coverage drops inside the deeper valleys, including most of Beaver Creek Valley State Park. Trout streams, gravel back roads, and steep grades on Highways 76 and 44 are part of the experience, and drivers new to towing should map routes that avoid the tightest switchbacks.
