Campgrounds near Cohasset, Minnesota
Cohasset sits in Itasca County in north-central Minnesota, just west of Grand Rapids along US Highway 2, with the Mississippi River and Pokegama Lake defining much of the surrounding recreation area. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the Chippewa National Forest and the Mississippi Headwaters region, with a mix of private lakeside resorts, public parks, and state-run campgrounds within a short drive.
Options close to town range from full-hookup lakefront sites at Sugar Bay Campground-Resort on the western shores of Pokegama Lake to rustic, riverside camping at Schoolcraft State Park, a DNR-managed park along the Mississippi River that operates seasonally with primitive sites and no hookups. Itasca County Fairgrounds Campground offers in-town convenience, while Blueberry Hills Golf Course & RV Park pairs sites with course access.
For travelers willing to drive south toward Aitkin County, Hill City Park & Campground provides another affordable municipal option. Together these give RV renters a spread of experiences: hookup resorts, fairgrounds, golf-course parks, and rustic state park camping.
Things to do near Cohasset
Water dominates the recreation calendar. Pokegama Lake supports boating, swimming, and fishing, and Sugar Bay Campground-Resort sits directly on a sugar-sand beach with a marina and boat and motor rentals on site. The Mississippi River, which runs through Schoolcraft State Park, is a popular paddling corridor. Anglers target walleye and northern pike, and a boat access at the park provides river launch and dock access within a short walk of the campground.
On land, a two-mile trail system loops through virgin pine forest at Schoolcraft State Park, including a white pine more than 300 years old. The Forest History Center in Grand Rapids offers a recreated logging camp and museum a short drive from most sites, and Blueberry Hills Golf Course & RV Park adds a golf option close to town.
Winter visitors can snowshoe on ungroomed trails throughout Schoolcraft State Park, and area lakes support ice fishing once conditions allow.

The prime RV window runs from late spring through early fall. Schoolcraft State Park is open year-round for day-use, but camping is available only from mid-May to early September, so travelers targeting that park need to plan within that window. Private resorts on Pokegama Lake, including Sugar Bay Campground-Resort, typically run May through October, with peak demand around July and August weekends and holidays.
Spring brings mud, black flies, and unpredictable weather, but also lower occupancy and strong fishing. Summer is peak season across the region: warm days, long daylight, and heavy weekend booking pressure at both public and private campgrounds. Early fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and color change through the birch and maple forests.
Winter shuts down most private campgrounds and non-winterized state park sites. Snow-covered terrain supports snowshoeing on ungroomed trails throughout Schoolcraft State Park, but RV travelers should expect very cold conditions and limited services from December through March.
How to book campgrounds near Cohasset
State park sites at Schoolcraft are handled through the Minnesota DNR reservation system. Camping and lodging reservations for Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are available up to 120 days in advance, and all campsites in state parks and recreation areas require a reservation before they may be occupied, year-round. Overnight guests also need a state park vehicle permit in addition to the camping reservation, which can be purchased at the time of booking, online, or on arrival.
Private campgrounds like Sugar Bay Campground-Resort and Blueberry Hills Golf Course & RV Park take bookings directly by phone or through their websites, and seasonal sites tend to fill first. Itasca County Fairgrounds Campground and Hill City Park & Campground are booked through their local operators. For summer weekends, book several months out; midweek and shoulder-season stays are usually easier to secure.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of hookup and rustic experiences. Sugar Bay Campground-Resort has fourteen campsites with ten offering full hook-ups and a 36-foot length limit, so larger rigs should confirm fit before arrival. Schoolcraft State Park's campground is rustic, with no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the sites and no shower facilities, though drinking water and vault toilets are available, and sites can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet in length.
Cell service is spotty once outside the Grand Rapids and Cohasset town area, so download maps and confirm reservations before leaving pavement. Bugs peak in June, bears are present throughout the Chippewa National Forest area, and food should be stored accordingly.
