Water activities dominate a summer visit. Maplewood State Park has eight major lakes with boat and canoe rentals, swimming, and fishing, plus 25 miles of hiking trails and 20 miles of horse trails through rolling hardwood terrain. Glendalough State Park, roughly a half-hour southeast, adds a non-motorized heritage fishery on Annie Battle Lake, a paved bike loop, and a swimming beach. Otter Tail County itself has hundreds of fishable lakes for walleye, sunfish, crappie, and bass, plus public boat launches at most of them. The camping season runs primarily from the Minnesota fishing opener in mid-May through mid-October. Late May through August is peak, with warm days, long daylight, and full campground amenities. Weekends on lakeshore sites at Maplewood State Park and popular private resorts fill weeks in advance, especially around the fishing opener, the July 4 holiday, and family reunion weekends in July. September and early October are quieter and cooler, with fall color peaking in late September through the first week of October across Maplewood and the surrounding hardwood forest. Running water is shut off at Maplewood in mid-October, though primitive toilets remain available year-round. Winter is cold and snowy. A few state park camper cabins remain bookable, typically Thursday through Sunday, and groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails operate, but most private RV parks and resorts close for the season. Spring is short and often wet, with muddy access roads and lingering ice on smaller lakes into April.

Sites in this region are generally wooded or lakefront, with gravel or grass pads. The main campground at Maplewood State Park has 71 single-family sites, 32 of them with electric hookups, plus flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and a dump station. Camper cabins are rustic with no indoor plumbing or cooking facilities. Private resorts around Otter Tail, Pelican, and Swan lakes typically add full hookups, laundry, playgrounds, docks, and boat rentals. Cell service is generally usable but can be spotty in wooded park interiors. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late May through August, especially near wetlands. Firewood must be sourced locally or bought on site to comply with Minnesota invasive-species rules. Nights cool off quickly even in summer, so pack layers for evenings on the lake.
