Campgrounds and RV parks near Floodwood, MN

Fishing drives most trips in this region. The St. Louis River runs through town with shore access and a boat landing, and nearby lakes hold walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish. Big Lake Shores Campground and The Lounge and Bent Trout Lake Campground both put campers on productive water within walking distance of sites. Savanna Portage State Park preserves the historic Savanna Portage Trail, a 6.3-mile route once used by fur traders and Dakota and Ojibwe peoples, and marks the Continental Divide between the Mississippi and Great Lakes watersheds. The park has hiking, mountain biking, four lakes for paddling, and a pine-shaded swimming beach on Loon Lake. Golfers can play at Minnesota National Golf Course & RV Park without moving the RV. Day trips reach Duluth and Lake Superior in about an hour, and surrounding national forest land offers gravel road exploring, berry picking in late summer, and fall color drives.

The usable camping season in this part of Minnesota runs roughly from mid-May through mid-October. Most private and municipal campgrounds open around the Minnesota fishing opener in mid-May and close before hard freezes return in October. Water hookups and dump stations are typically shut off outside that window. Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day book out well in advance at lakeside parks, and holiday weekends fill fastest. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and black flies, peak from late spring through early summer; reviewers at Savanna Portage note mosquitoes can be brutal, and a screen tent makes a real difference. Early fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong color from late September into early October. Winter camping is limited: Savanna Portage State Park keeps a year-round camper cabin and some rustic winter use, but most RV parks close, and the region regularly sees subzero cold and heavy snow from December through February.

Campgrounds around Floodwood are wooded, quiet, and generally small. Expect gravel or grass pads, mature tree cover that can limit satellite and solar performance, and a mix of 30- and 50-amp service depending on the park. At Savanna Portage, showers, 30-amp hookups, and a dump station cover the basics for RVers. Cell coverage is spotty once off the U.S. 2 corridor; at Savanna Portage there is no Verizon signal at the campground itself, though reception improves near the Loon Lake area. Sites near water tend to be buggy from late spring into midsummer. Bring repellent, screen shelters, and long sleeves for evenings. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving invasive pests. Services in Floodwood itself cover the basics: grocery, hardware, fuel, and a few restaurants. Larger stores, propane refills, and RV repair are easier to find in Grand Rapids to the west or Duluth to the east.
