Campgrounds near Harmony, Minnesota
Harmony sits in Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota's Driftless Area, about two miles north of the Iowa border. The Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail connects the town to the Root River Trail system, putting RV travelers within easy reach of paved bike routes, limestone caves, and one of the country's largest Old Order Amish settlements.
Campground options range from full-service resorts to small local grounds. Harvest Farm Campground Resort sits south of town on bluffs above the Upper Iowa River, with river access for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Chimney Rock Canoe Rental and Campground pairs riverside sites with paddling outfitting. The Old Barn Resort, north of Harmony along the Root River near Preston, offers hookups and direct access to the Root River State Trail. Highway 250 Campground near Lanesboro and Bluffton Campground & Bar round out the closer options for shorter stays.
Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park, roughly a half-hour drive northwest, adds a state-run option with reservable sites for travelers who want a park setting rather than a private resort.
Things to do near Harmony
Niagara Cave, just south of Harmony, features a 60-foot underground waterfall, tall passages, and marine fossils, all explored on foot. The constant 48-degree temperature year-round makes it a reliable option on hot or rainy days. A short drive northwest, Mystery Cave in Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park is Minnesota's longest cave, with guided walking tours through formations, pools, and winding passages.
Cyclists head straight to the trails. The paved Root River State Trail connects with the Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail, adding paved miles through farmland, hardwood forests, and trout streams. Local outfitters along the Root River rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes for summer floats.
Amish country tours run from downtown Harmony, with van and self-guided routes visiting working farms, furniture shops, and roadside stands selling quilts, baked goods, and produce.

The core RV season in Bluff Country runs from late April through late October. Most private campgrounds in the area operate on a seasonal schedule. Harvest Farm Campground Resort closes on the last Sunday in October each year, and neighboring grounds follow similar calendars. Winter closures reflect hard freezes, snowpack, and buried water lines.
Summer draws the heaviest traffic. Weekends fill early during Root River Trail cycling season, Amish country touring, and local festivals in Lanesboro and Preston. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is realistic for full-hookup sites in July and August. September and early October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and hardwood color across the bluffs, a strong window for families who can travel outside school breaks.
Snow typically begins in November around Preston and continues into April. Roads stay drivable in most conditions, but private campgrounds shut down, and cold-weather visitors touring Niagara Cave or Mystery Cave generally lodge in town rather than in RVs.
How to book campgrounds near Harmony
Private campgrounds around Harmony, including Harvest Farm Campground Resort, Chimney Rock Canoe Rental and Campground, The Old Barn Resort, Highway 250 Campground, and Bluffton Campground & Bar, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Call ahead to confirm RV length limits, hookup type, and whether pull-through sites are available for the rig.
For state park camping at nearby Forestville/Mystery Cave, use the Minnesota DNR reservation system at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone. Camping and lodging reservations for Minnesota state parks and recreation areas are available up to 120 days in advance, and all campsites in state parks and recreation areas require a reservation before they may be occupied, year-round. All vehicles entering a state park or recreation area also need a Minnesota state park vehicle permit, purchased separately from the site fee.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is rolling, not flat. Roads dip in and out of river valleys, and some county routes toward Niagara Cave use well-graded gravel. Larger Class A motorhomes and long fifth wheels should stick to state highways and paved county roads where possible. Cell service can drop in the deeper valleys of Fillmore County, so download maps before leaving town.
Expect horse-and-buggy traffic on rural roads through Amish country. Slow down, pass wide, and skip the horn. Deer are common at dawn and dusk, especially in fall.
Campgrounds near Harmony lean rustic to mid-service. Full hookups are available at select resorts along the Root River and Upper Iowa River, while smaller grounds offer electric and water only. Bring leveling blocks: sites on the bluffs are scenic but rarely dead flat. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving invasive pests.

dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/park.html?id=spk00017When is the best time of year to visit Harmony, MN in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV rental Minnesota trips around Harmony. June, July, and August bring warm days in the high 70s to mid-80s°F with cool nights perfect for campfires, ideal for tubing the Root River and exploring Amish farms. September and early October are arguably the best for fall colors lighting up the bluffs, with daytime temps in the 60s and far fewer crowds. Spring (mid-April to May) is quieter and great for birding. Winters are genuinely cold (lows in the teens and 20s°F with snow), so most campgrounds close November through April. Pro tip: time your visit for Lanesboro's Rhubarb Festival in early June for a true small-town Minnesota experience.
weather.gov/arx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great. Expect roughly 18-22 MPG for a Class B campervan, 8-12 MPG for a Class C motorhome, and 10-14 MPG for a truck towing a travel trailer. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop through Bluff Country, budget around $60-$100 in fuel for a Class C. The Minnesota DNR releases sites 120 days in advance, and popular spots at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park sell out fast for summer weekends and fall color season. You'll mostly be on US Highway 52 (a smooth four-lane connecting to Rochester) and quiet two-lane county roads winding through farmland and bluffs. Watch for two local specifics: Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on County Roads 21, 24, and 30 (slow down, pass wide, and never honk), and white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially in fall. Some county roads near Niagara Cave are gravel but well-maintained for RVs. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most renters stick to May through October.
