Campgrounds near Hayfield, Minnesota
Hayfield sits in Dodge County in southeastern Minnesota, roughly 20 miles west of Rochester and within easy reach of Interstate 90 and Interstate 35. The surrounding farmland and small river valleys hold a mix of state park camping and private RV resorts, giving RV travellers a range of options within a short drive of town.
The closest full-service state park is Rice Lake State Park, located about 7 miles east of Owatonna on County Road 19. Between early April and late October, the park's campground offers roughly 40 sites, with 19 electric sites in Loop B suitable for smaller and mid-sized RVs. Private resort-style camping is available at Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Beaver Trails near Austin, and additional private RV parks in the area include Brookside Campgrounds, Oakwoods Trails Campground, and Autumn Woods RV Park.
Rochester and its Mayo Clinic hospitals, the SPAM Museum in Austin, and Owatonna's historic downtown are all within a short drive, making Hayfield a workable base for families who want a mix of outdoor time and small-city stops.
Things to do around Hayfield
Rice Lake State Park is the main outdoor draw in the immediate area. Visitors camp under tall hardwoods, photograph spring wildflowers, picnic, and birdwatch as migrating waterfowl pass through the shallow marsh. Paddlers can cross the lake to reach canoe-in campsites for a more secluded night out, and roughly 5 miles of trails loop the park for day hiking. Canoe rentals are available on site. Winter activities include cross-country skiing and snowmobiling on the trails.
Families looking for on-site activity often base at Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Beaver Trails, which pairs RV camping with two outdoor pools heated to 86°F, the Pirate's Cove Water Park, and a full calendar of themed weekends. Off-park stops include the SPAM Museum and Jay C. Hormel Nature Center in Austin, and Rochester's shops, restaurants, and medical campus about 45 minutes east.

The RV season in southeastern Minnesota runs roughly from April through late October. Rice Lake State Park's campground is typically open April 1 through October 23, and Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Beaver Trails runs from mid-April through mid-October. Most private parks in the area follow a similar pattern, with limited or no services once overnight temperatures start dropping below freezing.
Late spring brings wildflowers, migrating waterfowl, and comfortable hiking weather, though sites can be soft after rain. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, active thunderstorms, and family programming at resort parks. Weekends fill quickly, especially around holidays, so reservations help secure preferred sites.
Fall is a strong shoulder season, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood colour running through late September and October. Winter closes most drive-in campgrounds, but Rice Lake State Park remains open for day use, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
How to book near Hayfield
Rice Lake State Park uses the Minnesota DNR reservation system. Campsites can be reserved up to 120 days in advance at mndnr.gov/reservations or by phone at 866-857-2757. The call center runs April through September from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and October through March on a reduced weekday and weekend schedule. A state park vehicle permit is required in addition to the camping fee, and the electric sites in Loop B are the practical choice for most RVs.
Private campgrounds near Hayfield, including Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Beaver Trails, Brookside Campgrounds, Oakwoods Trails Campground, and Autumn Woods RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites. Themed and holiday weekends at Beaver Trails book out early, so plan several months ahead for July and August stays.
What to expect on site
Rice Lake State Park is a compact, wooded state park with a shallow marsh lake at its centre. Sites are close together and shaded by tall hardwoods, with a few Loop B sites getting afternoon sun. Some pads are unlevel and can have logs or rocks around the edges, so shorter rigs generally have an easier time. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, 30-amp electric hookups are available in Loop B, and the walk-in, cart-in, and canoe-in sites are more primitive with vault toilets. Showers and flush toilets are in the main loop.
Private resorts in the area lean toward full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and family amenities such as pools, playgrounds, and planned weekend events. Grocery, fuel, and propane stops are easy to reach in Hayfield, Owatonna, Austin, or Rochester. Because the park sits in a marshy environment, insects can be heavy in warmer months, so bug repellent and rain gear are worth packing.
