Camping near Howard Lake, Minnesota
Howard Lake sits in Wright County, about 43 miles west of Minneapolis and 44 miles south of St. Cloud on U.S. Highway 12. The area is a small-lake belt of central Minnesota, so most RV parks are lakeshore properties built for weekend and seasonal use rather than backcountry camping.
Private resorts dominate the immediate area. Codgers Cover RV Resort sits on Howard Lake itself with 104 sites, paved roads, city water and sewer hookups, and a sandy beach. Cokato Lake RV Resort, roughly a short drive west in Cokato, is a 68-acre cooperative with a heated pool, mini golf, and pickleball and tennis courts. A J Acres Campground and St Cloud Clearwater RV Park sit closer to Interstate 94 for travelers routing through the St. Cloud corridor.
Airstream owners have a rare option nearby: Minnesota Airstream Park in Clear Lake is an Airstream-only RV resort open to owners of Airstream trailers, set among oak trees near the Twin Cities.
Things to do near Howard Lake
Water recreation drives most trips. Cokato Lake covers roughly 550 acres with clear water and good crappie fishing, and Howard Lake supports swimming, pontooning, and shore fishing from resort docks and boat launches.
For state land, Lake Maria State Park near Monticello offers hiking through hardwood forest and paddling on small glacial lakes. Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge, about an hour northeast near Zimmerman, is set up for birding and wildlife viewing across a mosaic of wetlands and oak savanna.
Off-water, Minnesota Pioneer Park in Annandale preserves 19th-century buildings as an open-air museum, and the Luce Line State Trail passes through the area for biking and hiking. Downtown Minneapolis, the Mall of America, and the Minnesota Zoo are all within a day-trip drive.

The practical RV season runs from May through mid-October. Codgers Cover RV Resort is open May 1 through September 30, and Cokato Lake RV Resort operates into mid-October, mirroring the seasonal pattern of most private parks in this part of Minnesota.
June through August is peak. Temperatures are warm, lakes are open, and weekend activities at family-oriented resorts are in full swing. Mosquitoes are heavy in wooded, waterfront parks, so bug spray is essential. Reservations for popular weekends and holidays such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill quickly and should be locked in well in advance.
Early fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lower demand. By November, most private resorts have closed for the season. Winter camping in the immediate area is limited to state parks and recreation areas, which remain reservable year-round through the Minnesota DNR.

How to book near Howard Lake
Private resorts handle bookings directly. Codgers Cover RV Resort, Cokato Lake RV Resort, A J Acres Campground, and St Cloud Clearwater RV Park take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Cokato Lake operates as a cooperative with the majority of lots owned by members, so transient and seasonal rentals are limited and worth booking early.
Minnesota Airstream Park requires proof of Airstream ownership before a reservation is confirmed, and bookings are handled manually rather than through instant online checkout.
For nearby state parks and recreation areas such as Lake Maria, campsites are reservable through the Minnesota DNR reservation system 120 days in advance. Every vehicle entering a state park also needs a daily or annual state park vehicle permit in addition to the campsite reservation.
What to expect at Howard Lake campgrounds
Expect classic Midwestern lake camping. Sites at Codgers Cover RV Resort and Cokato Lake RV Resort are heavily seasonal, with park models and long-stay setups, paved interior roads, and a strong neighborhood feel where residents get around by golf cart. Transient RVers are welcome but will find themselves camping among a settled community.
Amenities at the larger resorts include a heated pool at Cokato Lake, playgrounds, laundry, showers, and small stores. Wi-Fi tends to be limited or slow, and cell coverage can be patchy under heavy tree cover, so download maps and reservations before arrival.
Most sites can handle mid-size rigs, but confirm site length and hookup type before booking, as some lots at Cokato Lake are sized for trailers under 30 feet. Quiet hours are typically enforced, and pets are usually allowed on leash.
