Campgrounds and RV parks near Independence, MN

The Baker Park Reserve on Lake Independence is the local anchor for outdoor recreation, with a swim beach, paved bike loop, and boat rentals. Lake Minnetonka is a short drive east and offers marinas, public boat launches, and lakeside towns like Excelsior and Wayzata for a shore-day break from the RV. Day trips into Minneapolis put the Chain of Lakes, Minnehaha Falls, and the Mississippi River trail system within reach. Families staying at Dakotah Meadows RV Park have quick access to Mystic Lake Casino entertainment, while the Minnesota Valley State Trail gives hiking, biking, and equestrian access south of the metro. The multi-use Minnesota Valley State Trail parallels the Minnesota River, with the Shakopee-to-Chaska section paved and a natural surface trail running from Chaska to Belle Plaine. Crow-Hassan Park Reserve and other Three Rivers Park District properties add prairie trails, mountain biking, and paddling within 20 minutes of Independence.

The practical RV season in the Twin Cities region runs from May through October. Private parks like the KOAs and Dakotah Meadows typically operate on a longer shoulder season than state park campgrounds, which mostly follow a spring-to-fall schedule, though many Minnesota state parks and recreation areas offer year-round camping and lodging with reservations required for all campsites. Summer is peak. July and August bring warm days, thunderstorms, and full campgrounds, particularly on weekends and around the July 4 holiday. Lakes are warm enough for swimming, and mosquitoes are heaviest in June. September and early October deliver cooler nights, fall color, and easier reservations. Winter is a hard stop for most RV travel here. From October to April, Minneapolis can remain below freezing all day long, and the city typically has 72 days a year when the temperature never rises above 32 °F. Water systems at most campgrounds are shut off from late October until spring.

Expect a mix of amenity levels. The two Minneapolis KOAs and Codgers Cover RV Resort lean toward full or partial hookups, laundry, showers, and family features like pools or playgrounds. Dakotah Meadows RV Park offers full hookups near Mystic Lake Casino. State park equestrian sites are more basic; the Minnesota Valley horse camp provides hitching rails and fire rings, with limited or no electric. Cell coverage is generally strong across the metro but can drop in the Minnesota River bottoms and wooded park reserves. Bring bug spray from late May through August, and pack for temperature swings, as spring and fall nights can drop into the 30s Fahrenheit. Firewood should be purchased locally to prevent the spread of forest pests.
