Campgrounds and RV parks near Lanesboro, MN

Biking the Root River State Trail is the main draw. The entire trail is paved with asphalt and links Fountain, Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford, and Houston, making it one of Minnesota's most accessible multi-use trails for biking, walking, running, and in-line skating. Outfitters in town rent bikes, tubes, kayaks, and canoes for float trips on the Root River. Forestville Mystery Cave State Park adds a full day of activity. Visitors can tour Mystery Cave, Minnesota's longest cave, seeing stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and underground pools on guided tours led by park naturalists. The cave stays at a constant 48 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The park also protects three spring-fed trout streams and the restored 1800s village of Historic Forestville, operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. Downtown Lanesboro adds theater, small shops, and restaurants within walking distance of most in-town campgrounds.

The camping season runs spring through fall, with each shoulder offering a distinct trade-off. Spring brings cool nights, high water on the Root River, and strong trout fishing, but bugs and muddy trails are common through May. Wildflowers bloom in the bluffs, and turkeys and grouse are active in the woods. Summer is peak season. Weekends book out well in advance, the trail is busiest, and river outfitters run daily shuttles. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and humidity climbs in July and August. Weekday arrivals see notably lower demand than Friday and Saturday nights. Fall is a favorite for many returning RV travelers: cooler days, fewer bugs, and bluff colors that typically peak in early to mid October. The Forestville Mystery Cave State Park campground is open April 1 through November 30, so late-season trips are possible, but overnight temperatures drop quickly by November. Private campgrounds in the valley generally follow a similar April to October window, so confirm dates directly with the operator.

Roads into Lanesboro are two-lane and winding as they drop into the Root River Valley, but they are paved and manageable for standard RVs and trailers. In-town campgrounds tend to have grass or gravel sites on relatively flat riverside terrain; state park loops at Forestville sit in wooded, rolling country with tighter turns, and the campground loops themselves are paved. Expect limited cell coverage in the valley and inside the state park, with little to no AT&T service reported at Forestville. Download maps and reservations before arrival. Firewood is typically sold on site; bringing wood from outside the county is discouraged to limit tree pests. Mosquitoes and ticks are typical from late May through early September, and timber rattlesnakes are occasionally seen on rock outcrops in the bluff country. Rattlesnakes are a state threatened species and should be left alone.
