Camping near Preston, Minnesota
Preston sits in Fillmore County in southeast Minnesota's Bluff Country, a rugged, unglaciated region of limestone bluffs, trout streams, and hardwood forest along the Root River. The town is the county seat and calls itself the trout capital of southern Minnesota, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want river access, state park camping, and paved bike trails within a short drive.
The area's anchor attraction is Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park, one of southern Minnesota's largest state parks at 3,583 acres, roughly six miles south of town, and it contains Minnesota's longest known cave. State park camping options include the main drive-in campground, a group campground, an equestrian area, and camper cabins. Private options closer to town include The Old Barn Resort, Highway 250 Campground, Maple Springs Campground, and Eagle Cliff Campground and Lodging along the Root River.
Preston is also a trailhead on the Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail, which connects to the Root River State Trail for roughly 60 miles of paved riding through Bluff Country.
Things to do around Preston
Cave tours are the signature activity. Mystery Cave holds a steady interior temperature around 48°F year round and offers guided tours daily in the summer months, exploring Minnesota's longest known cave with stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and underground pools. Above ground, over 16 miles of trails wind through hardwood forests along the South Branch of the Root River, offering trout fishing, hiking, and horseback riding opportunities, and the park protects three spring-fed trout streams.
Road and trail cyclists ride from Preston onto the Harmony-Preston Valley and Root River state trails, which follow a former rail corridor at a gentle grade. Bike, canoe, kayak, and tube rentals are available in nearby Lanesboro. Families can also visit Historic Forestville, a living history village site operated by the Minnesota Historical Society with tours available on the weekends in the summer months.

The primary RV camping season in Bluff Country runs from mid-May through October. The Forestville/Mystery Cave group campground is open mid-May through October, and the main drive-in sites follow a similar warm-season window. The camper cabins at the park are open year-round with electricity and heat, though campground facilities including flush toilets, showers, and drinking water are seasonal from mid-April through mid-October, with primitive toilets available year-round.
Summer is peak season. Sites fill on weekends, and the Root River Trail towns are busiest in July and August and again on fall color weekends in late September and early October. Trout streams draw anglers from the spring opener through fall.
Winter shifts the region toward cross-country skiing and snowmobiling on the Bluff Country trail network. Most drive-in RV loops close or offer only limited services, roads inside the parks may not be plowed to full standards, and hookups can be shut off once temperatures drop below freezing.
How to book near Preston
Sites at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park are reserved through reservemn.usedirect.com or by calling 866-857-2757, up to 120 days in advance, with a non-refundable reservation fee for both online and phone bookings. A Minnesota state park vehicle permit is required in addition to camping fees.
Cabins and equestrian sites use the same reservation system but have separate inventory, so book the exact site type intended. Cave tours are booked separately and can be made through the same Minnesota State Parks system.
Private campgrounds around Preston, including The Old Barn Resort, Highway 250 Campground, Maple Springs Campground, and Eagle Cliff Campground and Lodging, take reservations directly through their own websites. Summer weekends and fall color weekends can sell out weeks in advance, so book early.
What to expect on site
The main state park campground has multiple loops including a primitive loop with pit toilets, a tent loop without electricity, and sites with electrical hookups, with standard electric sites carrying 30-amp service. The main park campground has shower and restroom facilities as well as a dump station, though these are separate from the group camping area. Note that there is limited to no AT&T cell coverage in the park, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
The campground sits in a wooded valley along the South Branch of the Root River, so expect shaded sites, uneven terrain in spots, and mosquitoes near dusk in summer. Bring a jacket for cave tours regardless of surface temperature.
Private campgrounds along the Root River generally offer full or partial hookups, tubing and paddling access, and proximity to the paved bike trail. Preston itself has fuel, groceries, and restaurants within a short drive.
