Campgrounds near Spring Valley, Minnesota
Spring Valley sits in Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota's Driftless Area, a region of karst topography with sinkholes, caves, and cold-water trout streams. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to two state parks, a regional short-track motor speedway, and several private campgrounds in the Root River watershed.
The closest developed camping is at Deer Creek Speedway Campground, adjacent to the racetrack, and Maple Springs Campground in the Root River valley. State-park options include the Horse Camp at Forestville Mystery Cave State Park and the main campground at Lake Louise State Park near LeRoy. Autumn Woods RV Park rounds out the private options for full-hookup travelers.
Forestville Mystery Cave State Park lies between Spring Valley and Preston, with Mystery Cave holding Minnesota's longest cave system at over 13 miles of mapped passages. Lake Louise State Park covers roughly 1,100 acres of rolling terrain including hardwood forests, open meadows, and a 25-acre lake fed by tributaries of the Little Iowa River.
Things to do near Spring Valley
Cave tours are the signature draw. Mystery Cave stays around 48°F year-round and contains stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and underground pools, with over 13 miles of mapped passages. Above ground, Forestville Mystery Cave State Park has 19 miles of hiking trails along the South Branch of the Root River, plus trout fishing on three streams and 17 miles of horse trails.
At Lake Louise State Park, the 25-acre lake supports swimming from a sandy beach, canoeing, and fishing, and the trail network connects to the paved Shooting Star State Trail for flat family cycling.
Race fans stay at Deer Creek Speedway Campground for weekend dirt-track events. Historic Forestville, a restored 19th-century village operated by the Minnesota Historical Society, sits inside the state park for a half-day visit.

The camping season in this part of Minnesota runs roughly mid-April through October. Forestville Mystery Cave State Park operates its main and equestrian campgrounds during this window with flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, and a dump station. Lake Louise State Park runs a shorter season: its showers and dump station operate only from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, though the sites themselves are reservable across a longer window.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Popular electric sites and lakeside spots go quickly, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations, though shoulder-season RV travelers should confirm shower and dump-station status before arrival.
Winter camping is limited. Snow typically covers the ground from November through March, and most drive-in loops close to standard RV use. Camper cabins at Forestville remain available with electricity and heat for year-round bookings.
How to book
State-park sites in the area go through the Minnesota DNR reservation system. Reservations are required and can be made up to 120 days in advance at the DNR reservation site or by calling 866-857-2757. That window applies to both Forestville Mystery Cave State Park and Lake Louise State Park, including the equestrian loops. New dates open at 8 a.m. Central Time on the first day they become bookable.
Popular electric sites at Forestville and lakeside sites at Lake Louise can be gone within minutes of the window opening for holiday weekends. Cave tours at Mystery Cave are booked separately through the same DNR system; current-year cave tours become reservable beginning April 1.
Private campgrounds book independently. Deer Creek Speedway Campground reservations align with the race schedule, while Maple Springs Campground and Autumn Woods RV Park take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone. A Minnesota state-park vehicle permit is required at any DNR site.
What to expect on site
Expect wooded, valley-floor sites with limestone bluffs, oak and maple canopy, and cold, clear streams. Forestville Mystery Cave State Park has 128 campsites across two campgrounds: the main campground has 73 sites with 23 electric, and the equestrian campground has 55 sites with 23 electric. Sites accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs, and each has a table, grill, and fire ring. A dump station and hot showers serve the main campground.
Lake Louise is smaller and quieter, with 20 single-family sites, 11 of which have electric hookups, plus two group sites. Single-family sites can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in the river valleys, with limited to no AT&T service reported inside Forestville. Download maps in advance and plan for paved campground loops but curvy county-road approaches.

Winter (November through March) can bring ice and blowing snow. Pro tip: download the Minnesota 511 app before your trip — it gives real-time road conditions, construction, and weather alerts specific to southeastern Minnesota, which is invaluable when you're driving a taller motorhome through the bluffs.

Pro tip: use a credit card with a high enough limit to absorb the deposit hold plus your trip charges, it makes your rent an RV in Spring Valley experience completely friction-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Spring Valley during winter?
Yes, winter rentals are possible and can be a magical way to experience the Driftless Area's snow-covered bluffs, though availability is more limited from December through March. Some Spring Valley hosts winterize their RVs and pause bookings, while others offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore power capability for cold-weather camping. Daytime temperatures in January average around 25 degrees Fahrenheit with overnight lows often well below zero, so plan for shore-power sites. Lake Louise State Park keeps a winter camping loop open. Pro tip: message hosts directly to confirm the RV is rated for sub-zero use and ask about extra propane — winter trips burn through fuel fast, but watching snow fall over the bluffs from a warm motorhome is unforgettable.
