Campgrounds and RV parks near Brookfield, MO

Pershing State Park is the local draw for hiking and wildlife viewing, with an elevated boardwalk crossing wet prairie and bottomland forest along Locust Creek. It connects to the adjacent Fountain Grove Conservation Area, which is popular for birding, fishing, and seasonal waterfowl watching. At Long Branch State Park, day-use visitors can still fish, boat, paddle, and swim while the campground is closed, and three boat ramps provide access to the 2,430-acre reservoir. Trails through the Chariton River Hills Natural Area pass remnant savanna and prairie in a region where most land was long ago converted to row crops. In Brookfield itself, travelers can restock at local grocery and hardware stores, visit the General John J. Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site in nearby Laclede, or make a day trip to the Amish community around Jamesport.

Late spring through early fall is the primary RV season in north-central Missouri. May and June bring green prairie, active wildlife, and comfortable overnight temperatures, though thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches are common. July and August are hot and humid, with the busiest weekends at lake campgrounds, and popular state park sites often book well ahead for holidays. September and October are widely considered the best months for touring. Days are mild, humidity drops, biting insects thin out, and hardwoods along the creek bottoms turn color. Hunting seasons open in the surrounding conservation areas, so wearing blaze orange on shared trails is advisable. Winter camping is limited. The campground at Long Branch State Park is closed for a full-year construction project, with reopening expected the following year, and the park office can be reached at 660-773-5229 for updates. Many private parks in the area reduce services or close entirely from late November through March.

Public campgrounds in this part of Missouri lean rustic. Pershing State Park offers basic and electric sites with a shower house, but hookups are limited and cell coverage can be spotty in the bottomland areas. Roads are paved to the campground, though some interior loops are gravel and can be soft after heavy rain. When open, Long Branch State Park offers basic and electric campsites, including some 50-amp sites, plus walk-in tent sites and boat-in sites along the lake. A dump station, shower house, and firewood vending machine are on site, and potable water is available year-round through a frost-free spigot during the off-season. Missouri State Parks recommend no more than two dogs per campsite, and pets must be supervised and kept on leashes no longer than 10 feet at all times.
