Campgrounds and RV parks near Claycomo, MO

Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are the dominant family draws, and staying at Worlds Of Fun Village puts guests within walking distance of the gates. Downtown Kansas City is roughly 15 minutes south and covers the National WWI Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Country Club Plaza, and the barbecue circuit. Outdoor time centers on Smithville Lake, which offers swim beaches, boat rentals, a marina, hiking and biking trails, and a nearby golf course. Closer in, Watkins Mill State Park, Parkville Nature Sanctuary, and the Missouri River trails give shorter half-day options. Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium are a straight shot down I-435 for ballgames and NFL Sundays.

Peak camping season runs from late April through October, with the heaviest bookings around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Worlds Of Fun Village fills quickly on weekends when the park is open, and the two Clay County campgrounds at Smithville Lake take reservations up to six months in advance, so summer weekend sites often go fast. Spring brings green landscapes and wildflowers along with active severe-weather season: thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornadoes are common from April into June, so travelers should monitor NWS Kansas City and Pleasant Hill alerts and pick sites with sturdy shelter access. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon storms. Fall is typically the most comfortable stretch, with mild days, lower humidity, and color peaking in mid to late October. Winter camping options are limited: Camp Branch at Smithville Lake operates April 1 through October 1, and Smith's Fork Campground and many private parks also close from late fall through early spring.

Terrain around Claycomo is gently rolling with a mix of oak-hickory woods, farmland, and suburban development. Most private parks in the area offer level gravel or paved sites, full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pet areas. Cell coverage is strong across all major carriers within the metro. At Smithville Lake, expect a mix of unimproved, electric-only, and water-plus-electric sites, with dump stations located at each campground entrance rather than at individual sites. Shade varies loop to loop, and some lakeside sites need leveling blocks. Quiet hours run from 10 pm to 6 am, and generator use is restricted overnight. Summer brings mosquitoes and ticks near the lakes, so bring repellent. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV service are all easy to reach along I-35, US-69, and I-435, and Kansas City International Airport is about 20 minutes northwest for fly-in renters.
