Campgrounds and RV parks near Edina, MO

Water recreation drives most trip planning in this area. Forest Lake at Thousand Hills State Park offers a swim beach, marina, boat rentals, and fishing, with a City of Kirksville 90-horsepower limit and idle-speed rule for anything higher. A city boat permit is required to launch on the lake. The Sever lakes are quieter and more primitive. Baring North Sever Lake sits on 449 acres with a 17-acre lake, and its lack of ambient light makes for strong stargazing. Hurdland South Sever Lake adds disc golf and volleyball to the usual swimming and fishing mix. Inland, Thousand Hills has mountain-biking and hiking trails and an interpretive shelter for the park's petroglyphs, left by inhabitants more than 1,500 years ago.

Northeast Missouri has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The most reliable RV-camping window runs from April through October, with late spring and early fall offering the most comfortable temperatures and lowest humidity. Summer is peak season around Forest Lake, driven by the swim beach and marina operating from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Late spring is the wettest stretch, so expect thunderstorms and occasional trail mud. July and August are hot and humid, with average highs in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. Winter operations are limited. At Thousand Hills State Park, Campground 1 is closed from November through March, while Campground 2 remains open with potable water available and firewood sales suspended until the on-season. The Sever lakes stay accessible but are primitive, so cold-weather RVers should plan for self-contained operation. Ticks are prevalent in the wooded areas from spring through early fall, and long pants plus repellent are advisable on trails.

Expect rural, low-density surroundings. Roads leading to the recreational areas are paved but narrow and can be rough close to the campground entrances, so slow down with a towable or larger motorhome. The Sever lakes offer gravel pads with fire rings but limited hookups, though Hurdland South has two electrical shelters plus four without. Thousand Hills State Park offers both basic and electric campsites, with individual bathhouses serving each campground and a marina store with firewood and supplies during the on-season. Campground 2 is smaller and generally quieter than Campground 1. Cell service is spotty in the conservation areas but usable at Thousand Hills. Pets are welcome across the region but must be leashed, with Missouri State Parks requiring a leash no longer than 10 feet.
