Campgrounds near El Dorado Springs
El Dorado Springs sits in Cedar County in southwest Missouri, about a half-hour drive north of Stockton Lake, a 25,000-acre reservoir on the Sac River managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake anchors most RV camping in the region, with public campgrounds around its 298 miles of shoreline and private parks along Highway 54 and Highway 32.
RV travelers staying close to town have several private options. Arrowhead Point RV Park and Campground and Caplinger Woods RV & Campground sit near the Highway 54 corridor, both drawing travelers headed to Stockton, Pomme de Terre, and Truman lakes. Osage Prairie RV Park serves travelers to the west toward Nevada, Missouri.
For lakeside stays, Stockton RV Park is a family-run park minutes from Stockton Lake with full hookup sites, and The Stables RV & Lake Shop offers additional access closer to the water. The area suits families using El Dorado Springs as a supply base for boating, fishing, and day trips to nearby state parks.
Things to do around El Dorado Springs
Stockton Lake is the main draw. Its protected coves are popular for sailing, wakeboarding, and water skiing, and shore fishing is productive for walleye, bass, and crappie. A horse and hiking trail runs roughly 11 miles between the Orleans Trail South and Hawker Point areas, with camping at both trailheads.
Stockton State Park occupies a peninsula between the Big Sac and Little Sac arms of the lake, with a marina, boat ramps, swim beach, and picnic grounds. Day trips reach Pomme de Terre State Park to the northeast and the Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site near Ash Grove. In town, families time visits around the El Dorado Springs Picnic, an annual Founder's Day celebration held downtown on the weekend closest to July 20, which draws thousands of visitors over three days.

Peak camping season around Stockton Lake runs from May through September, when water systems and full amenities at Corps of Engineers campgrounds are turned on. Summer weekends are the busiest window, with the July Picnic in El Dorado Springs pulling extra visitors into town and pushing nearby RV parks to capacity. Reserve well ahead for Independence Day and the Picnic weekend.
Spring brings the region's wettest stretch. May is typically the rainiest month, and thunderstorms with strong wind and hail are common across southwest Missouri from April into June. Lake levels can rise quickly after heavy rain events, which can temporarily close low beaches and shoreline sites.
Fall is a quieter, cooler alternative, with September and October offering warm days, lower humidity, and steady bass fishing. Winter is cold, with occasional snow and ice from December into February. Some Corps campgrounds close or reduce services in the off-season, so confirm loop availability before arrival.
Booking campgrounds near El Dorado Springs
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requires reservations for all Corps-managed campsites at Stockton Lake. Book through Recreation.gov, which handles the ten Corps campgrounds around the reservoir, including Hawker Point, Orleans Trail, Crabtree Cove, Ruark Bluff, Cedar Ridge, and Masters. The Recreation.gov booking window is a rolling six months in advance, released at 10 a.m. Eastern, and holiday weekends fill first.
Stockton State Park campsites and camper cabins are reserved through the Missouri State Parks system. Private parks near El Dorado Springs, including Arrowhead Point RV Park and Campground, Caplinger Woods RV & Campground, Stockton RV Park, The Stables RV & Lake Shop, and Osage Prairie RV Park, take direct bookings by phone or website. For summer weekends, aim to reserve six to eight weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Roads through the Stockton Lake area are generally accessible for standard RVs, but a few Corps loops have narrower access roads and tighter interior turns. Verify site length before booking a larger rig, and check whether the site is back-in or pull-through. Some loops have limited shade.
Hookups vary by campground. Private parks near El Dorado Springs typically offer full hookups with water, sewer, and electric. Corps campgrounds mix electric sites with non-electric loops, and not all sell firewood on site, so stock up in town before arrival. Dump stations are available at most developed campgrounds.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in coves and wooded sections of the lake. Grocery, fuel, and hardware are easiest in El Dorado Springs and Stockton. Summer brings mosquitoes and ticks, so pack repellent and check kids after hikes.
