Campgrounds near Hermitage, Missouri
Hermitage is the county seat of Hickory County in west-central Missouri, sitting on the Pomme de Terre River just upstream of Pomme de Terre Lake. At multipurpose pool the reservoir covers 7,820 acres and can expand to as much as 16,100 acres during periods of heavy rain as excess runoff is impounded to prevent downstream flooding. The lake and its state park drive most RV traffic to the area.
Pomme de Terre State Park has locations on both the Hermitage and Pittsburg sides of the lake, with a marina and boat ramps for fishing bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, or muskie, two public swimming beaches, two hiking trails, and approximately 240 campsites plus three yurts, four camper cabins, one full-service marina cabin and a lake house. Pittsburg - Pomme de Terre State Park sits across the lake from the Hermitage unit and holds the larger share of campsites and lodging.
Private options fill in the gaps around the lake. Pomme de Terre Resort and Bright Paradise By The Lakes cater to lake-focused stays, while Sidetrack RV Park and Turkey Creek RV Park suit travelers who want simpler hookup sites without the state-park reservation window.
Things to do around Hermitage
Fishing is the headline activity. Pomme de Terre Lake is the only lake in Missouri that offers true muskellunge fishing, a fishing pier and marina sit on the Pittsburg side, and fishing is allowed anywhere on the lake. Muskie fishing is typically best during June, September and October at water temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees F.
On the water, boaters have easy access. Boat ramps ring the lake, and the state park marina offers fuel, rentals, tackle, and a store. Canoe and kayak use is popular on the Pomme de Terre River below the dam.
Off the water, families use the two public swimming beaches inside the state park and its two hiking trails, including the Indian Point trail in the Pittsburg area that ends at a rock platform overlooking the lake.

The Hermitage area follows a humid subtropical pattern with a clear peak season. Summer brings hot, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and this is when the state park beaches, marina, and lake traffic run at capacity. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill first, and Missouri State Parks allows reservations up to 12 months in advance, so campers targeting summer holiday weekends should book early.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Spring can produce severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes across southwest Missouri, while fall delivers cool nights, low humidity, and prime muskie action in September and October. Foliage color typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winter is the quiet season. Water and showerhouse services at Pomme de Terre State Park are seasonal, so travelers relying on hookups in the off-season should confirm availability at private parks or plan for self-contained camping.
How to book a campground near Hermitage
For Pittsburg - Pomme de Terre State Park and the Hermitage unit, reservations go through the Missouri State Parks system. Reservations can be made online through the state parks reservation website or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). Sites can be booked up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window, up until 7 p.m. Central Time the day before arrival.
Reservable sites may be available on a walk-up basis when not booked, and camping is limited to any 15 days within a 30-consecutive-day period at any one park or historic site. A two-night minimum applies to weekend reservations at many Missouri parks.
Private campgrounds around the lake, including Pomme de Terre Resort, Sidetrack RV Park, Bright Paradise By The Lakes, and Turkey Creek RV Park, book directly through the property. Call ahead for big-rig clearance, sewer hookups, and pet policies before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Hermitage itself is a small county seat with a courthouse square, a couple of grocery and hardware stops, and limited late-night services, so RVers should provision in Bolivar or Buffalo when arriving from the south. Cell coverage around the lake is uneven and can drop inside coves and on wooded state-park loops.
The state park campgrounds are split between the Hermitage and Pittsburg sides of the lake, and the two sides are not connected by a short road; they require a drive around the lake. Loop 400 in the Pittsburg area holds the yurts, and the Hermitage side has the lake house near a boat launch and picnic area.
Ticks and chiggers are common in warm months on wooded trails, and summer thunderstorms can arrive quickly. Bring leveling blocks; many lake-adjacent sites at private parks sit on sloped ground above the shoreline.
