Camping near Kirksville, Missouri
Kirksville sits in the rolling hills of northeast Missouri, with Forest Lake and Thousand Hills State Park just west of town. The area is compact and rural, which keeps drive times to campgrounds short and traffic light. Most sites are set among oak-hickory woods, savanna remnants, or small reservoirs typical of the region.
Campground options range from full-service private parks to state park loops and county-run lake shelters. Lakeroad Village RV Park offers a private RV base close to Kirksville and Forest Lake, while Campground 2 - Thousand Hills State Park provides quieter state park sites with basic and electric options. The Fort is another close-in choice, and Hurdland South Sever Lake gives access to a small county lake east of town.
For a second-lake trip, Long Branch State Park lies south near Macon on Long Branch Lake. Together these give renters a workable mix of hookup sites, walk-in sites, and lakeside camping within about an hour of Kirksville.
Things to do near Kirksville
Forest Lake anchors most trips. Thousand Hills State Park has a swimming beach, a marina with boat and paddlecraft rentals, and a network of hiking and mountain-biking trails. An interpretive shelter helps visitors understand petroglyphs left by area inhabitants more than 1,500 years ago. Boats on Forest Lake are subject to a city horsepower cap, and a Kirksville city boat permit is required to launch.
Sever Lake near Hurdland adds fishing, swimming, and a disc golf course. Long Branch Lake, roughly an hour south, offers boat ramps, a sandy swimming beach, and prairie hiking trails through the Chariton River Hills Natural Area. In town, Kirksville has grocery resupply, a farmers market in season, and the Truman State University campus.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, when the Thousand Hills swimming beach is open and marina rentals are in full swing. Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest at state park loops, so book well ahead. July is the hottest and most humid month, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. May brings green landscapes but also some of the wettest weather of the year, with saturated ground at some primitive sites. September and October deliver cooler nights, fall color across the oak-hickory woods, and lighter crowds.
Winter camping is limited, and many private amenities scale back. Note also that the campground at Long Branch State Park is currently closed for a multi-season construction project, with reopening planned once renovations are complete, so confirm status with the park office before planning a trip there.
How to book near Kirksville
Missouri State Parks sites, including Thousand Hills and Long Branch, are reserved through the state parks reservation system online at icampmo.com or by phone at 877-422-6766. Sites can be booked up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window. Family sites and electric loops go first for summer weekends.
Sever Lake sites at Hurdland fall under Knox County rules that require a camping permit, so check current permit sources with the county before arrival. Private options such as Lakeroad Village RV Park and The Fort take direct reservations; call ahead for big-rig length and hookup availability.
Camping at any single Missouri state park or historic site is limited to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period.
What to expect at Kirksville campgrounds
Thousand Hills State Park has two campgrounds offering basic and electric campsites, family sites in Campground 1, and a special-use area. Both loops have shower houses, and dump and potable-water access are available in the park. Cabins overlook Forest Lake and are air-conditioned and heated.
Long Branch State Park, when open, offers basic, electric, and walk-in sites, plus boat-in campsites with fire rings, lantern posts, and picnic tables. Sever Lake shelters near Hurdland include a small mix of sites with and without an electric outlet, and campers of varying sizes are accommodated.
Expect gravel or paved pads at state park loops, a 10-foot leash rule for pets, and ticks in tall grass from spring through early fall.

That means no driving a big rig if you're nervous, and no setup stress. Just use the Delivery filter when browsing listings, then message the host with your destination address. visitkirksville.com/t/rv-parks-campgroundsWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Kirksville?
The sweet spot for a Kirksville RV trip is mid-May through early June and late August through mid-October, when daytime highs hover between 70 and 82 degrees and humidity backs off. July is the warmest month (average high around 86 degrees) and great for swimming at Forest Lake, while October delivers spectacular fall color across Thousand Hills' oak-hickory forests. Winter is cold (January highs around 32 degrees with about 19 inches of annual snowfall), so most full-service campgrounds run April through October. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental Kirksville for Truman State University graduation in May or NEMO Fair in August well ahead, as rigs disappear fast on those weekends.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work?
First time renting an RV? You're going to love how easy RVezy makes it. Every host gives you a personal walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump valves. You can message your host with questions before booking, during the trip, and after. Kirksville is an ideal place to start: roads are flat, traffic is light, and you're minutes from Thousand Hills State Park where you can practice backing in. Pro tip: ask your host about choosing a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Kirksville for your first trip, they're easier to maneuver and park than full-size Class A coaches.
mostateparks.com/park/thousand-hills-state-parkWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
Don't worry: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is just a phone call away whether you're on US-63 north of Kirksville or off the beaten path near Sugar Creek Conservation Area. Coverage typically includes flat tires, lockouts, jumpstarts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app and often knows the nearest dump station, propane refill, or RV-friendly mechanic in town. Northeast Missouri's flat terrain and friendly small-town feel mean help can usually reach you quickly. Pro tip: save your host's contact and the roadside assistance number to your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Kirksville RV rental out of state or across the border?
Yes, you can take your Kirksville RV rental across state lines. Iowa is just 40 miles north (Lake Wapello and Lake of Three Fires make easy overnighters), Illinois is about 2 hours east, and Kansas is around 3 hours west. Most RVezy hosts welcome U.S. interstate travel, though some set mileage or geographic limits, so confirm via message before booking. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and coverage, but travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: a Kirksville to Hannibal to Mark Twain Lake loop is a classic Missouri RV road trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Kirksville RV trip?
Fuel is easier on the wallet here than you might expect. Missouri consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, and Kirksville stations along US-63 and Highway 6 are usually a few cents below the state average. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans (Class B) often hit 15 to 20 MPG. For a weekend trip to Thousand Hills (4 miles away) plus a day drive to Mark Twain Lake and back (150 miles round-trip), budget roughly $40 to $80 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Kirksville before heading into smaller towns, where prices can climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Kirksville?
For most weekends you're in great shape booking 2 to 4 weeks ahead, but lock in earlier for peak dates. Thousand Hills State Park sites are reserved through the Missouri State Parks system at mostateparks.com and can be booked up to one year in advance. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, NEMO Fair week (early August), and Truman State University family weekends fill up months out. Private parks like Lakeroad Village and Eagle Lodge often have more last-minute openings. Pro tip: book your RV rental Missouri trip and your campsite in the same sitting, then ask your host if they'll deliver, so you can skip the campground driving altogether.
mostateparks.com/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Kirksville?
Driving an RV in and around Kirksville is refreshingly low-stress. The terrain is gently rolling, traffic is light, and the main routes (US-63 running north-south, Highway 6 running east-west, and Highway 11) are wide, well-maintained two- and four-lane roads. There are no mountain passes or low urban bridges to worry about. Winter can bring snow and ice from December through February, and summer thunderstorms can roll through quickly, so check the forecast each morning. Pro tip: avoid the few narrow lake roads inside Thousand Hills State Park after dark if you're new to a big rig, and consider RV delivery if you'd rather skip driving altogether.
modot.org/traveler-informationWhat amenities will I find at Kirksville campgrounds?
You'll be well taken care of. Thousand Hills State Park's two campgrounds offer 30- and 50-amp electric hookups, drinking water spigots, modern shower houses with flush toilets, a dump station, firewood for sale at the marina, playgrounds, and ADA-accessible sites. Lakeroad Village RV Park has full hookups including sewer plus laundry and cable. Private parks like Shoemaker's add Wi-Fi, a dog park, and a dump station. Need to fill fresh water or dump tanks mid-trip? The Thousand Hills dump station is open to overnight campers, and most full-service parks in town allow non-guests to dump for a small fee. Pro tip: grab firewood at the Forest Lake Marina, it's cheaper than gas station bundles.
mostateparks.com/park/thousand-hills-state-parkWhat's included inside RVezy rentals in Kirksville?
Most RVs on the platform come ready for adventure. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many Kirksville-area rigs also include a TV, generator or solar, outdoor awning, and sometimes a Wi-Fi hotspot. Some hosts even stock linens, dishes, and camp chairs as part of the listing. Pro tip: review each listing's amenities list closely and message the host to confirm specifics like generator hours or whether a starter kit (toilet paper, propane, sewer hose) is included.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kirksville%2C%20MissouriWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You have lots of flexibility. Common Kirksville host add-ons include delivery and setup, generator usage, propane refills, bedding and kitchen kits, outdoor camping gear, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or around Kirksville, often near Truman State University or along US-63, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough on arrival. Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others offer unlimited mileage, and additional miles typically run $0.25 to $0.50. Pro tip: if you're planning a Kirksville to Lake of the Ozarks run, ask about RV rental with unlimited mileage upfront, it can save you real money over a week-long booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kirksville%2C%20MissouriHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit card at booking, never directly to the host, so your money is protected. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Deposit amounts vary by RV and are clearly listed on each listing before you book. Pro tip: snap quick walkaround photos and a short video at pickup and drop-off (interior, exterior, tanks, mileage). It's the single best way to keep your deposit refund smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Kirksville in the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Kirksville are absolutely possible and can be a cozy, crowd-free adventure. While most state park sites at Thousand Hills shift to limited service after October, Campground 2 stays open year-round, and Lakeroad Village RV Park operates 12 months a year. Kirksville winters are cold (January highs near 32 degrees, lows around 15 degrees) with occasional snow, so look for RVs with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a strong furnace, and shore power capability. Pro tip: ask your host for a winterization briefing at pickup, and book a site with full hookups so you can run heat tape on the water line. Snow-dusted Forest Lake at sunrise is pure magic.
