Camping near Lancaster, Missouri
Lancaster is a small town in Schuyler County in far northern Missouri, close to the Iowa state line. The area is rural, with rolling farmland, timbered creek bottoms, and reservoirs that anchor most of the region's public campgrounds. Because Lancaster itself has few commercial RV facilities, most trip planning centers on state parks and private RV parks within a short drive.
RV renters typically split time between two systems. Iowa state parks run by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources cover Lake Wapello State Park to the northeast, while Missouri State Parks operate Thousand Hills State Park south of Lancaster near Kirksville. Both systems reserve online and support standard RV site sizes with electric or full hookups. Private options such as Lakeroad Village RV Park, Camp Wapello, and The Fort fill in with year-round or event-weekend stays.
Kirksville, about 40 minutes south, is the closest town with full-service groceries, propane, dump stations, and RV supplies, and works well as a resupply stop between park visits.
Things to do around Lancaster
Water recreation drives most trips. Forest Lake at Thousand Hills State Park covers 573 acres with 17 miles of shoreline used for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and boating, and the swimming beach is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Kirksville sets a 90 HP limit on Forest Lake, and a city boat permit is required to launch.
Lake Wapello State Park in Iowa offers a large sand beach, a 289-acre lake with a 5 mph motor limit, and a seven-mile Lake Shore Trail that circles the water. Anglers target bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish, while largemouth bass are catch and release only.
Hiking, mountain biking, and viewing the protected Native American petroglyphs at Thousand Hills round out a family itinerary.

Camping season in northern Missouri and southern Iowa runs strongest from April through October. At Thousand Hills State Park, Campground 2 stays open year-round, and potable water for filling freshwater tanks remains available there during the off-season from November through March.
Lake Wapello's campground follows a stricter pattern: closed January through March, off-peak in April and late October, and peak from May 1 through October 15. Eleven of the park's family cabins operate April through October, and two cabins stay open year-round.
Summer is the busiest window, especially on holiday weekends when sites at Forest Lake fill quickly. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and more reliable availability, with October offering peak fall color across the surrounding hills. Winter camping is limited to the year-round sections and requires self-sufficiency for water and heat.
How to book campsites
Missouri State Parks use a central reservation system for Thousand Hills State Park. Bookings can be made online or by phone up to 12 months in advance, expanded from the previous six-month window. All 50 numbered campsites, including 12 basic sites, 35 with 30-amp electric, and 3 with 50-amp electric, are on the reservation system.
Iowa State Parks handle Lake Wapello State Park through iowastateparks.reserveamerica.com or by phone. The campground is 100% reservable and a reservation is required, with bookings accepted up to three months in advance. Cabin stays during peak season carry a Friday-to-Friday week-long minimum.
Private options such as Lakeroad Village RV Park and The Fort are booked directly with the operator. For summer holiday weekends, secure sites several weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
Thousand Hills accommodates RVs up to about 40 feet, and each of the two main campgrounds has a dump station and showerhouse. Sites are set back from Forest Lake, so plan on a short walk or drive to the beach, marina, and restaurant.
Lake Wapello's campground sits adjacent to the lake and mixes full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites with modern showers, restrooms, and a trailer dump station. Access roads can be rough after weather, so scout the last few miles.
Cell service is generally usable but not strong in wooded valleys. Firewood should be bought locally near the park to limit the spread of emerald ash borer and other pests. Quiet hours and leash rules apply at both parks, and camping at Missouri State Parks is limited to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period.
