Campgrounds near Liberal, Missouri
Liberal sits in Barton County in southwest Missouri, within easy driving distance of both Missouri and Kansas state parks along the eastern edge of the Ozarks. The area draws RV travelers moving between Kansas City and Joplin along I-49, and it offers a mix of tallgrass prairie, lake camping, and roadside RV parks.
Prairie State Park lies just southwest of town and protects Missouri's largest remaining tract of tallgrass prairie, home to a free-roaming bison herd. About 30 minutes west across the Kansas line, Crawford State Park sits on Lake Crawford near Farlington and holds several campgrounds, including Rocky Cove and Oak Point, both popular with RV campers.
For travelers wanting full hookups and a straightforward overnight, Osage Prairie RV Park in Nevada, Missouri sits close to I-49, and Camp Mi Casa on the Route RV Park is positioned along historic Route 66 near Carthage. Together these options cover primitive prairie camping, lakeside sites, and full-service RV parks.
Things to do near Liberal
Wildlife viewing is a headline draw. Prairie State Park protects nearly 4,000 acres of tallgrass prairie with a resident bison herd and about 14 miles of hiking trails ranging from roughly 1.5 to 4.5 miles. Because bison roam freely, pets are only permitted on two designated trails and in the campground and picnic areas.
Lake Crawford, at Crawford State Park, supports fishing for channel catfish, crappie, and striped bass, along with boating, water skiing, scuba diving, and a swimming beach. Four hiking and biking trails wind through the park, including a six-mile mountain bike loop around the lake.
In nearby Nevada, families can visit the Bushwhacker Museum and Jail and the I-49 Nevada Speedway. Fort Scott National Historic Site is about a 20-minute drive west into Kansas and works well as a half-day trip.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping in this part of Missouri. March through May brings warming temperatures, prairie wildflowers, and redbud blooms at Crawford State Park, though spring is also the wettest period of the year, and thunderstorms and tornadoes are common. Fall offers cooler nights, lower humidity, and multicolored foliage along the wooded ridges at the Ozark edge.
Summers are hot and humid, with July daytime highs commonly in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit. Prairie State Park has no hookups and limited shade, so summer campers there should plan carefully for heat and ticks. Lake sites at Crawford stay busiest from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Winters are cold but generally mild by Midwest standards, with occasional snow. Osage Prairie RV Park stays open year round; bathrooms at some Crawford State Park campgrounds close during winter, so verify amenities before booking a cold-weather trip.
How to book
Reservation systems vary by campground. Missouri State Parks generally use icampmo.com or 877-422-6766, but Prairie State Park is an exception: its campsites are walk-up registration only and cannot be reserved online. Backpackers using the designated Coyote Trail backcountry site must register with the park office before starting their trip.
Crawford State Park campgrounds in Kansas, including Rocky Cove and Oak Point, are booked through ReserveAmerica. Cabins and most RV sites can be reserved in advance, and a Kansas state park vehicle permit is required at the entrance, with self-pay stations available if the office is closed.
Private parks such as Osage Prairie RV Park and Camp Mi Casa on the Route RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on arrival
Site quality varies widely across the area. Rocky Cove and Oak Point offer level concrete pads, most with shade and many with lake views. Oak Point has a shower house, picnic shelter, playground, and amphitheater, while Rocky Cove is more limited on facilities and campers there often walk over to Oak Point for showers.
Prairie State Park is primitive: four sites with no hookups, no electricity, and no running water, though potable water is available at the maintenance area uphill from the campground. Access involves crossing a shallow creek that can become impassable after heavy rain, and coyotes and bison are commonly heard and seen.
Osage Prairie RV Park offers level pull-throughs with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, and other standard amenities aimed at travelers using I-49.
