Campgrounds and RV parks near Macon, MO

Water recreation dominates. Long Branch State Park offers a swimming beach, boat ramps, a marina store, and three boat ramps on Long Branch Lake, with fishing for bass, crappie, walleye, and catfish. Thousand Hills State Park adds a marina, a swim beach, and fishing for bluegill, crappie, and walleye on Forest Lake. On land, Thousand Hills has a paved multi-use trail system for hiking and mountain biking, plus an interpretive shelter protecting Native American petroglyphs left by area inhabitants more than 1,500 years ago. Long Branch has trails through the Chariton River Hills Natural Area, where hikers can see prairie wildflowers and birds such as red-headed woodpeckers, brown thrashers, and indigo buntings. Off-park, families can visit the Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline, about half an hour southwest, and historic downtown Macon for local restaurants and shops.

The prime camping window runs from April through October. Spring warms slowly, with chilly nights common through April and comfortable days arriving by May. Spring is also the wettest stretch and the peak tornado season in Missouri, so RV travelers should monitor forecasts for thunderstorms and severe-weather watches. Summer brings warm lake temperatures suitable for swimming, along with heat and humidity at the peak. Holiday weekends and summer months are when state-park sites fill fastest. Fall is scenic and quieter, with peak color in the surrounding hills in October. Winter camping is possible at some sites, but water and showerhouses at Missouri State Parks are typically off between November and March, with potable water available only at frost-free spigots. One important planning note: the campground at Long Branch State Park is closed for all of 2026 for construction, so travelers should call the park office or check the state-parks status map before booking. Thousand Hills Campground 2 remains open year-round, while Campground 1 operates April 1 through October 31.

State-park sites near Macon skew toward electric hookups on paved or gravel pads with a picnic table and fire ring. Most sites do not have individual water or sewer, but dump stations and potable water fills are provided in season, with frost-free spigots available year-round at Thousand Hills Campground 2. Cell coverage is generally usable at both parks, though reception varies at more remote sites. Shoemaker RV Park offers full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, pull-throughs sized for larger rigs, laundry, and family amenities. Access roads into the state parks are largely paved, though secondary loops include gravel stretches, so allow extra time when towing. Standard Missouri State Park rules apply: pets on leashes no longer than 10 feet, no more than two dogs per site recommended, and pets not permitted on swim beaches or inside most park buildings.
