Campgrounds near Moberly
Moberly sits in north-central Missouri, in Randolph County about an hour north of Columbia and roughly halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis. The area offers a mix of state park campgrounds and privately run RV parks, making it a practical base for lake recreation, hiking, and off-road riding.
Finger Lakes State Park lies about 45 minutes south near Columbia and is one of only two ATV-designated state parks in Missouri, with reclaimed coal-mining terrain, small lakes, and a mixed-use campground. Long Branch State Park, north of Moberly near Macon, borders a large reservoir and is built around water recreation. Closer to town, Cottonwoods RV Park and Shoemaker RV Park serve travelers looking for full hookups and easy highway access, while Pine Grove Village Community caters to longer stays.
Most RV renters use Moberly as a launch point for exploring the region: a Finger Lakes weekend for off-road riding, a Long Branch trip for boating and swimming, or a hookup night in town while passing through on US 63 or US 36.
Things to do near Moberly
Water recreation anchors most trips. Long Branch State Park fronts a large reservoir with a swim beach, three boat ramps, a marina, and fishing for bass, crappie, walleye, and catfish. Its trail system winds through the Chariton River Hills Natural Area with prairie and savanna remnants.
Finger Lakes State Park is the standout for anything motorized. It has a dedicated ORV trail system with over 70 miles of trails, a professionally designed motocross track, and a pump track, plus the 2.75-mile Kelley Branch Mountain Bike Trail and a 4.5-mile paddling water trail across former coal-pit lakes. A valid ORV permit is required for riders.
In Moberly itself, Rothwell Park offers walking paths and a seasonal miniature train. Columbia, roughly 40 miles south, adds dining, shopping, and college-town attractions.

The camping season runs strong from April through October. Missouri State Park campgrounds around Moberly stay open year round, but water service and the showerhouse at Finger Lakes only operate April 1 through October 31; during the off-season potable water is available at the park office and the showerhouse is closed.
Summer is peak season. Lake water is warm enough for swimming, weekends and holidays fill quickly, and advance reservations are strongly recommended. Spring temperatures are pleasant but spring rains often leave ORV and hiking trails muddy, and April through June is the wettest stretch statewide. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are most frequent in spring.
Fall brings cooler weather, colorful foliage, and lighter crowds, making it a good window for shoulder-season RV trips. Winter camping is possible but comes with limited services and the risk of freezing temperatures and precipitation. Note that the Long Branch State Park campground is closed through the current construction period and is expected to reopen the following year, so confirm status before booking.
How to book near Moberly
Missouri State Park campsites at Finger Lakes and Long Branch are reserved through the state's icampmo1.usedirect.com system or by calling 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). Reservations open at 7 a.m. Central Time and can be made up to 12 months in advance, an expansion from the previous six-month window. Reservable sites left unbooked may also be available on a walk-up basis.
Private parks, including Shoemaker RV Park, Cottonwoods RV Park, and Pine Grove Village Community, are booked directly with the property by phone or through the operator's website. For summer weekends and holidays at Finger Lakes, book several weeks out, especially during warm-weather ORV events.
What to expect near Moberly
Finger Lakes has 35 mixed-use campsites, of which 16 have electric hookups, plus a dump station, vault toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Sites 11 through 17 offer 50-amp service suitable for larger rigs. Expect engine noise from the adjacent ORV trails and motocross track, especially on weekends. The park gate closes at 10 p.m. in season and 9 p.m. off-season.
Long Branch, when open, offers basic and electric sites, family paired sites, walk-in tent sites, and five boat-in sites, with concrete pads, a dump station, and shower facilities. Many sites have lake views but limited shade.
Private parks near town such as Cottonwoods RV Park provide full hookups, Wi-Fi, and laundry. Camping is limited to any 15 days within a 30-consecutive-day period at any one Missouri state park.
