Campgrounds near Princeton, Missouri
Princeton sits in Mercer County in far northern Missouri, close to the Iowa border and Interstate 35. The surrounding landscape of rolling hills, oak-hickory woodlands and small reservoirs makes the area a practical base for RV travelers moving between Des Moines and Kansas City.
Camping options within about an hour of town split into two categories. Public state parks provide the largest and most scenic sites: Nine Eagles State Park is a 1,100-acre park in Decatur County, Iowa, near Davis City, set in a hilly area with a 64-acre lake, and Crowder State Park covers 1,912 acres in the rolling hills of northern Missouri with more than 17 miles of hiking, bicycling, backpacking and equestrian trails. Private RV parks in the region, including Buffalo Run RV Park, Eagle Ridge RV Park and Ted's RV Park, cater to travelers who want full hookups, easy highway access and shorter check-in windows.
Most RV travelers use Princeton as either a weekend destination for lake fishing and trails or as a comfortable overnight stop on a longer route.
Things to do near Princeton
Water and trails drive most trips. At Crowder State Park, the 18-acre Crowder Lake supports fishing and boating, and more than 17 miles of hiking, bicycling, backpacking and equestrian trails wind through forested, rugged terrain that suits families with older kids.
Across the state line, Nine Eagles State Park adds a sandy swim beach and a longer trail network. Visitors can use six miles of bridle trails and nine miles of hiking trails, plus a three-mile loop that circles the lake and connects to the campgrounds. Bass, channel catfish and bluegill fishing is popular on the 64-acre lake, where only rowboats and electric motors are permitted. Birding, stargazing and short cycling loops round out the day.

Camping season in this part of the country is tightly bracketed by winter. At Crowder State Park, showers, water and the dump station are available from mid-April through October, and reservations are offered April 15 through October 31. A frost-free spigot at Campsite 10 provides potable water in the off-season for self-contained rigs. Nine Eagles follows a similar shoulder pattern, with peak-season sites reservable from spring through mid-fall.
Late spring and early fall offer the most comfortable RV weather: warm afternoons, cool nights and manageable humidity. Summer brings the busiest lake use at Crowder, along with hot, humid afternoons. July and August carry thunderstorm risk and biting insects near lakeshores.
Winter travel is possible for self-contained rigs at private parks, but expect frozen hookups, closed bathhouses at state sites and occasional ice storms that can shut down secondary roads.
How to book
Missouri and Iowa run separate reservation systems, so plan by park. For Crowder State Park, book up to 12 months in advance through the Missouri State Parks reservation portal or by calling 877-422-6766. Non-reserved sites are available for walk-up registration on a first-come, first-served basis, and weekday availability is common outside peak weekends.
For Nine Eagles State Park, advance reservations are made through the Iowa State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica, and the campgrounds are fully reservable. Private RV parks in the Princeton area, including Buffalo Run RV Park, Eagle Ridge RV Park and Ted's RV Park, generally take direct phone or online bookings and are the most flexible option for last-minute stops.
What to expect
State park sites in this region tend to be shaded, wooded and quieter than commercial parks. At Crowder, the campground offers basic, electric and full-hookup sites with modern restrooms, showers, a dump station and a laundromat. Full-sewer sites are limited, so book early if hookups matter.
Nine Eagles has three campgrounds with 68 sites, 28 of which have electrical hookups, plus modern showers, restrooms and a trailer dump station. Seven primitive equestrian sites offer fire rings and pit toilets.
Cell coverage is spotty in the wooded valleys, so download maps in advance. Bring leveling blocks, insect repellent and firewood sourced locally to comply with pest-transport rules.
