Campgrounds and RV parks near Salisbury, MO

History drives much of the trip planning here. Arrow Rock State Historic Site preserves a 19th-century river town with the J. Huston Tavern, dating back to 1834 and the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi River. Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park preserves several Native American burial grounds, the remains of an earthwork fort, and the remnants of the Missouria village located at the Great Bend of the Missouri River, and it houses Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center. Outdoor activity centers on Long Branch Lake, a 2,430-acre reservoir in Macon County, with a swimming beach, boat ramps, and marina services. Trails through the Chariton River Hills Natural Area cross preserved savanna and prairie remnants with diverse birdlife including red-headed woodpeckers, brown thrashers, and indigo buntings. The Lyceum Theatre in Arrow Rock stages live performances in a converted historic church during summer months, giving families an evening option after a day outdoors.

Missouri State Park campgrounds in this region follow a clear on-season and off-season split. At Arrow Rock, potable water stations are available throughout the campground during the on-season from April 1 to October 31, and during the off-season from November 1 through March 31 potable water, shower facilities and firewood are not available. Van Meter follows a similar pattern, with showers and water available from April 15 to October 31. The campground at Long Branch State Park will be closed for all of 2026 due to construction; for more information, call the park office at 660-773-5229. Summer weekends fill quickly at popular sites, especially those with lake access. Fall brings cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and strong color in the oak-hickory forest along the Missouri River bluffs. Winter camping is possible at sites with electric hookups where they remain open, but expect no potable water at spigots and no shower facilities.

Expect small-to-mid-size campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Arrow Rock has 47 campsites, many with basic electric hookups; a handful of sites have water and sewage hookups and options for 50-amp electricity. The layout includes a basic loop with 12 sites for tent campers and a larger area accommodating RVs up to 50 feet with full hookups. Van Meter offers about 22 sites with electric hookups in a wooded setting near an 18-acre fishing lake, and there is no on-site dump station, so RV users should plan to use the Marshall dump station roughly 10 miles away. Cell coverage can be spotty in the state park loops. Campground Wi-Fi at Arrow Rock is generally usable near the front of the electric sites but weaker deeper in the loops. Camping is limited to any 15 days within a 30-consecutive-day period at any one park or historic site.
