Campgrounds and RV parks near Wellington, MO

The area sits within reach of Lake Jacomo in Fleming Park, roughly a half-hour west, which offers boating, fishing, and picnicking. Missouri Town 1855, a living-history museum recreating a mid-19th-century Missouri village, is about 21 miles from the Oak Grove KOA and can fill a half-day. Families heading toward Kansas City can reach Worlds of Fun amusement park in under an hour. Closer to base, Lake Paradise Resort has fishing lakes suited to families. Owl Creek RV Park hosts a Dutch-style country market on-site with cheese samples, jarred goods, and Amish-style foods and spices, and downtown Odessa has restaurants, wineries, and small shops. Sports fans are within reach of Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums, and the I-70 Speedway sits just off the interstate near Odessa.

The Wellington area has a humid continental climate with a very large seasonal temperature contrast. Summers are hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms, while winters are cold with regular snowfall and hard freezes. Spring and fall are the most comfortable RV seasons. Mid-April through May and mid-September through mid-October are the prime windows, with milder days, drier air, and fall color along the Missouri River bluffs. Summer brings warm days good for pool time and lake swimming, but also the region's wettest months, with June typically the rainiest. The area sits in Tornado Alley, and severe-weather watches are common from spring into early summer, sometimes with hail. Winter camping is possible at year-round parks, but expect snow, ice, and short daylight. Kansas City averages about 26 days a year when temperatures never climb above freezing, most common from November through March, so plan for cold-weather RV skirting and heated hose setups if traveling in that window.

Most campgrounds near Wellington are working RV parks aimed at travelers on the I-70 corridor rather than destination resorts. Sites at Owl Creek are level with gravel or concrete pads, full hookups, a swimming pool, a fenced dog run, a playground, and a 24-hour bathhouse and laundry. Interstate noise carries at parks close to I-70, though it is generally manageable inside a rig with the A/C running. The Oak Grove KOA offers a saltwater pool, mini-golf, a jump pad, and Saturday pancake breakfasts from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which makes it a strong pick for families. Lake Paradise Resort trades polish for space, with wooded lakeside sites. Big rigs are accommodated at several properties; the Oak Grove KOA lists pull-throughs up to 105 feet. Confirm site length and pad type when booking.
