Campgrounds near Libby, Montana
Libby sits in northwest Montana at the confluence of the Kootenai River and Libby Creek, surrounded by the Kootenai National Forest. The forest is the dominant public land in the region and offers 24 campgrounds with various amenities and settings, from developed sites with full facilities to primitive backcountry options. Private RV parks in and around town, including Two-Bit Outfit RV Park, Woodland RV Park, and Two Rivers RV Park and Campground, cover travelers who need full hookups.
Water dominates the recreation map. Libby Dam, located about 17 miles upstream from Libby, forms the 90-mile-long Lake Koocanusa, and the Kootenai River below the dam is recognized as a blue ribbon trout fishery. Koocanusa Marina and Resort provides lake-adjacent RV camping, while Kootenai River Camp Ground puts sites close to the river corridor.
Expect a mix of forested mountain terrain and river-valley sites. The Purcell Range rises north of the river and the Cabinet Mountains rise south, framing most drives and campgrounds in the area.
Things to do near Libby
Fishing is a headline draw. Lake Koocanusa holds kokanee salmon, Kamloops rainbow trout, bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout, and burbot, while the Kootenai River below Libby Dam is a well-known blue ribbon trout fishery.
Hiking, boating, and sightseeing round out the trip. Kootenai Falls, roughly 10 miles downstream of Libby, is one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the northwest, dropping 90 feet in less than a mile. Hundreds of miles of summer trail are open in the Libby area, ranging from short walks to routes into the 93,000-acre Cabinet Mountains Wilderness.
Drivers and climbers have options too. Stone Hill, adjacent to Highway 37 just south of the Koocanusa Bridge, offers more than 70 established climbing routes, and the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway loops the reservoir for a full-day drive.

The camping season runs late spring through early fall. Corps of Engineers sites at Libby Dam are reservable from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Kootenai National Forest campgrounds around Libby often open on a similar schedule, though some developed sites may not have services running until Memorial Day, so it pays to arrive self-sufficient.
Summer is short but warm and dry, and it is the peak booking season. Late-summer travelers should plan around wildfire risk. Fire restrictions are common from July into September depending on conditions in the surrounding forests, and closures can occur on short notice.
Winter shifts the area from RV camping to snow use. Groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails operate from December through March, and Turner Mountain Ski Area, located about 22 miles north of Libby, offers roughly 2,110 feet of vertical drop and around 400 acres of skiable terrain for alpine skiing on weekends and holidays.
How to book campgrounds near Libby
Public campgrounds around Libby are booked on Recreation.gov. Kootenai National Forest lists 24 campgrounds and issues permits through the same platform, with individual sites released on a rolling six-month window. Corps of Engineers sites at Libby Dam have also moved onto Recreation.gov for all campground reservations and day-use picnic shelter payments.
Booking windows differ by system. Libby Dam campsites become bookable at 8:00 a.m. MST four days before the desired arrival date, so reservations may only be made up to four days in advance, while day-use shelters can be booked six months out. Private RV parks such as Woodland RV Park, Two-Bit Outfit RV Park, Two Rivers RV Park and Campground, and Koocanusa Marina and Resort book directly through their own reservation channels.
Complete reservations before arrival, as there is no Wi-Fi or cellphone coverage at the kiosks in the Libby Dam campgrounds.
What to expect when camping near Libby
Sites tend to be rustic and forested. Most Forest Service and Corps of Engineers campgrounds in the area provide minimal services, focusing on lake and river access rather than full amenities. Full hookups are generally limited to private RV parks in and near town.
Connectivity and access are the two most common surprises. Cell service is limited or nonexistent at many of the more remote sites in the Kootenai National Forest, and road conditions to some campgrounds can be rough, with washboard surfaces and rutted sections on forest roads that may be difficult for larger rigs. Check length restrictions before towing in.
This is grizzly country. Expect wildlife, secure food storage, and carry bear spray. Firewood rules apply too: obtain firewood near your destination and burn it on-site to avoid moving tree-killing pests.

Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, and Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $275 per night, with Class B campervans falling in between. Because Libby sits off the busier Glacier corridor, nightly rates often beat what you would find in Kalispell or Whitefish. To score a cheap RV rental in Libby, book mid-week, target shoulder season in late May or September, and consider a travel trailer if you have a capable tow vehicle. Pro tip: use Instant Book on RVezy to lock in your dates before huckleberry season demand peaks in July and August.

dojmt.gov/driving/Is my RV rental in Libby protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RV rental in Libby, MT booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 2 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage tier at checkout, not the host. fs.usda.gov/r1/kootenaiCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Libby?
Yes, RV delivery Libby is a popular option, and it is perfect if you are flying into Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in Kalispell or simply do not want to drive a large rig down US-2. Delivery fees typically depend on mileage from the host's base. Pro tip: when you message the host, share your exact campsite number and arrival window so they can schedule water, power, and propane to be ready when you walk in.
stateparks.mt.gov/logan/How far can I drive, and what's the mileage policy?

Two Bit Outfit RV Park is a full-service park right in town that handles big rigs. Logan State Park, about 45 minutes east on US-2, offers shaded sites on Middle Thompson Lake. For a Lake Koocanusa view, Koocanusa Resort and Marina on Highway 37 has electric and water sites. Pro tip: Fireman's Park in Libby has a public dump station and potable water fill, a handy stop between adventures.
stateparks.mt.gov/logan/When is the best time to rent an RV in Libby?
Late June through mid-September is the sweet spot for a Libby Montana RV trip, with daytime highs typically in the 75 to 85 F range, low humidity, and long daylight hours perfect for evening hikes to the Kootenai Falls Swinging Bridge. July and August are peak (and huckleberry season), so book early. May and late September are quieter shoulder windows with cooler 50 to 70 F days and lower prices, and you can still catch fall larch turning gold in October along the Cabinet Mountains. Winters are snowy and cold (often single digits to 30s F), but a handful of hosts rent winterized rigs for ice fishing on Lake Koocanusa. Pro tip: Logan State Park is one of the few parks open year-round.
weather.gov/mso/I'm a first-time RV renter, will I actually be okay driving in Libby?
Yes, and Libby is one of the friendlier places in Montana to learn. Highways here (US-2 and MT-37) are wide, scenic, and far less crowded than the Going-to-the-Sun corridor in Glacier. Every RVezy host gives you a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering brakes, leveling, propane, the awning, and dumping tanks, so you are never left guessing. If you would rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and one backup in a quiet lot before heading toward Yaak or Bull Lake, narrow forest roads reward a little warm-up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or need help on the road?
You're covered, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is one phone call away whether you're parked at the trailhead for Ross Creek Cedar Grove or stuck on a gravel pull-off near Bull Lake. Roadside covers common issues like tire changes, lockouts, jump starts, fuel delivery, and towing. For mechanical questions, your host is also a direct text away, they know their rig best. Pro tip: cell service can drop in the Yaak Valley and on parts of MT-37 along Lake Koocanusa, so download offline maps before you leave Libby and note the nearest mile marker if you do need to call for help.
mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/What are the best road trips from Libby, Montana?
An RV road trip from Libby opens up some of the most underrated scenery in the Northwest. Top routes include: the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway on MT-37 (about 67 miles one way to Eureka, hugging a turquoise reservoir), Libby to Glacier National Park's west entrance via US-2 (about 150 miles, roughly 3 hours), Libby to Sandpoint, ID via US-2 west (about 95 miles of river views), and the Yaak River Loop through tiny Yaak, MT (about 110 miles round-trip). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts, confirm in advance, and travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: fuel up in Libby before heading north on MT-37, stations thin out fast.
fs.usda.gov/r1/kootenaiWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel budget won't sting. Class C motorhomes around Libby average about 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get a friendlier 16 to 20 MPG, and a midsize SUV pulling a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 13 MPG. Gas in Libby usually runs slightly above the Montana state average because of its remote location, expect to pay a bit more than Kalispell prices. For a 5-day trip with 400 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $200 to $275 for fuel. Pro tip: top off at the larger stations in Libby or Troy rather than waiting for the small pumps in Yaak or along Lake Koocanusa.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Libby?
For peak summer (July and August) you'll want to reserve campsites 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for full-hookup sites at Woodland RV Park or Two Bit Outfit RV Park. Logan State Park bookings open through the Montana State Parks reservation system and fill quickly for summer weekends. National Forest campgrounds in the Kootenai (like Howard Lake and Lake Creek) are reserved via Recreation.gov, with a 6-month booking window. Shoulder season (May, September, early October) is far more relaxed, often 2 to 4 weeks out is fine. Pro tip: midweek arrivals open up surprising last-minute availability even in July, especially at first-come Forest Service sites.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like around Libby?
Driving around Libby is mostly relaxed two-lane mountain highway, US-2 and MT-37 are paved, well-maintained, and gorgeous. You will share the road with logging trucks and occasional deer and elk (dawn and dusk are highest risk), and the Kootenai River drops just off the shoulder in spots. Forest roads off the main highways often turn to gravel quickly, so check with your host before taking a big rig past pavement. Winters (November to March) bring snow, ice, and chain-up conditions, especially over Pipe Creek or in the Yaak. Pro tip: Montana 511 gives live road and weather updates, an essential bookmark before any drive in Lincoln County.
mdt.mt.gov/travinfo/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Libby?
Expect a solid mix. Private parks like Woodland RV Park and Two Bit Outfit RV Park offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, showers, laundry, and dump stations. Logan State Park provides electric and water at many sites plus a dump station. National Forest campgrounds in the Kootenai (Howard Lake, Lake Creek, Sylvan Lake) are typically dry camping with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, no hookups, so plan to arrive with full water and empty tanks. Fireman's Park in Libby has a free public dump and potable water fill. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter, they cover almost every site combo you'll encounter.
stateparks.mt.gov/loganWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in Libby?
More than you'd think. A typical campervan rental Libby or Class C motorhome on RVezy comes equipped with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, real beds (queen plus bunks or convertible dinettes), heat and air conditioning, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on board. Most rigs include a TV, and many offer generators or solar for off-grid nights near Bull Lake or Howard Lake. Wi-Fi is hit-and-miss in the Kootenai backcountry, so don't count on streaming once you leave town. Pro tip: each listing on RVezy shows exactly what's included, plus sleeps count and bed layout, super helpful when planning a family RV trip Libby with kids.
fs.usda.gov/r01/kootenaiWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Libby commonly offer handy add-ons: linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), bikes and kayaks for Lake Koocanusa, generators, camp chairs and tables, and propane fills. Delivery is the most popular add-on, prices depend on distance from the host's home base. Pickup is usually at the host's residence in or near Libby, with an orientation walkthrough that takes 30 to 60 minutes. Mileage packages vary by host, so check the listing for daily included miles and per-mile overages before booking. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and linens into one package and your only job at the campground is to open a camp chair and watch the Kootenai River roll by.
fs.usda.gov/r01/kootenaiHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and handled securely through RVezy, no cash, no awkward transfers at pickup. You pay the rental total, taxes, and any add-ons when you book. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after the trip assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid issues: do a walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: keep all messages with your host inside the RVezy app, it creates a clean record that protects both of you and keeps your deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent a winterized RV in Libby for cold-weather trips?
Yes, winter RV trips are doable in Libby, and a handful of RVezy hosts list rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power hookups built for cold weather. Libby winters typically run around 15 to 35 F daytime with significant snow, so look for listings noting four-season insulation and skirting. Logan State Park stays open year-round and is a popular base for ice fishing and snowshoeing. Always travel with chains and check Montana 511 before driving Pipe Creek or MT-37. Pro tip: message hosts in advance to confirm that propane is topped off and to ask whether the freshwater system has been left active or drained, this small detail can make or break a winter trip.
