Fishing and paddling anchor most trips. The Missouri River holds walleye, catfish, and other species, with boat access available near Wilson Island. At Two Rivers, several sandpit lakes support fishing, non-powered boating, and a swimming beach, with Lake #5 offering trout fishing opportunities for a small fee. Hikers and cyclists have room to move. Approximately five miles of trails are used for hiking, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and mountain biking at Wilson Island, winding through cottonwood stands and along the backwater chute. Wildlife watching is strong year-round: deer graze in the park's fields, snow geese fly low overhead in the fall, and bald eagles are often perched in the tall cottonwoods during the winter. For a novelty stay, Two Rivers rents restored Union Pacific caboose cabins in addition to its RV loops.

The main camping season runs roughly mid-April through mid-October. Wilson Island is 100 percent reservable and accepts reservations April 15 through October 15, which effectively defines the developed camping window on the Iowa side. Spring brings wildflowers, mushroom hunting, and migrating waterfowl moving through the Missouri River corridor. Summer is peak. Lake swimming, sandpit paddling, and river fishing draw heavy weekend demand, especially at Two Rivers, which sits close to Omaha. Sites fill quickly, and holiday weekends should be booked well in advance. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and the region sits in a floodplain where severe weather is a real planning factor. Fall offers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong bird activity along the river. Winter camping is limited: many loops close, water is shut off, and only hardy travelers use the developed sites, though bald eagles are often visible in the tall cottonwoods, making day visits worthwhile.

Sites vary widely by loop. Two Rivers State Park features five campgrounds. Cottonwood Campground is on the north side of the park with 49 pull-through sites that include electric hookups. Some are by reservation only, which makes it a practical pick for larger rigs. Oak Grove Campground is the smallest one with only 16 sites. It does offer electric hookups. Next to it, you'll discover Goldenrod Campground, which sits on the shores of Lake 4. This is where guests will find the swimming beach. Expect flat terrain, cottonwood shade, and mosquitoes near the water. The park offers good T-Mobile cell service but no WiFi. At Wilson Island, the campground has modern showers and restrooms, nonelectric and electric campsites, and sites are spacious and shaded. Bring bug spray, a surge protector, and a plan for severe weather, since open skies over the Platte and Missouri floodplains mean storms move fast.
