Campgrounds and RV parks near Crofton, NE

Crofton sits in northeast Nebraska near the Missouri River, about seven miles south of Lewis and Clark Lake, a large reservoir formed by Gavins Point Dam that straddles the Nebraska and South Dakota border. The lake is roughly 16 miles long and 3 miles wide, and it anchors most of the RV camping in the area. The Nebraska side is managed as Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area by Nebraska Game and Parks; the South Dakota side is operated as Lewis and Clark Recreation Area by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. RV travelers typically base at one of four Nebraska-side campgrounds within the SRA: Weigand - Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, Burbach - Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, Yankton - Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, and Gavins Pt Horse Camp - Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area for equestrian travelers. Chief White Crane Recreation Area sits about 1.5 miles downstream of the Gavins Point Dam on Lake Yankton in South Dakota, and is another common choice within a short drive of Crofton. Together these parks offer electric sites plus primitive and equestrian options, with the town of Yankton nearby for groceries, fuel, and RV supplies.

Nebraska-side campgrounds, including Weigand, Burbach, Yankton, and the Gavins Pt Horse Camp within Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area, are reserved through Nebraska Game and Parks. Roughly three-quarters of sites at Weigand and Burbach are reservable up to 180 days in advance; the remainder are first-come, first-served, with fees paid at a self-service station on arrival. Reservations at Chief White Crane can be made up to three months in advance over the phone or online through the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks reservation system. A Nebraska park entry permit is required for the SRA, and a separate South Dakota park entrance license is required across the state line; both can be purchased online before arrival.
