Campgrounds and RV parks near Elgin, NE

Fishing drives most trips out of Elgin. Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area and Wildlife Management Area holds walleye, white bass, wipers, channel catfish, muskie, northern pike, and crappie, with five boat ramps around the reservoir. Willow Creek State Recreation Area holds crappie, bluegill, bass, catfish, walleye, northern pike, and wipers, with seven rock jetties for shore anglers. Beyond the water, Willow Creek offers an 8-mile hike and horseback trail with a limestone segment running from the swimming beach to the west edge of Pierce, along with equestrian sites. Headworks Park and ATV Trails has canal-side walking paths, a playground, a sandy beach, and bird watching during spring and fall migrations. The Calamus State Fish Hatchery, located below Virginia Smith Dam, is a popular add-on stop for camping trips based at Calamus.

The main camping season across the area runs from late spring through early fall. Loup Power District parks, including Headworks Park and ATV Trails, are open from May 1 to November 1, weather permitting, and close for the winter. State recreation areas remain accessible year-round, but water, showers, and dump stations are typically shut off outside the warm season. Summer weekends are the busiest window. Holiday weekends in June and July fill electric pads at Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area and Willow Creek State Recreation Area quickly, and Calamus draws heavy fishing traffic through the summer walleye and white bass season. RV travelers planning beach time should check current lake conditions before arrival, as summer algae advisories occasionally affect Nebraska reservoirs. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and hunting seasons on portions of Willow Creek beginning the first Tuesday after Labor Day and closing April 1. Winter camping is limited: expect cold, snow, and reduced services, with most campground hosts absent and drinking water shut off.

Facilities vary widely by park. Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area and Wildlife Management Area offers 122 pads with 30/50-amp electrical hookups plus 55 non-pad sites, modern restrooms, showers, water, and a dump and fill station at Little York Point, spread across the Homestead Knolls, Nunda Shoal, and Valley View Flat campgrounds. Willow Creek State Recreation Area has 165 electric campsites at Willow Way Campground, modern restrooms, showers, and laundry, though its dump and fill station is located in the town of Pierce, roughly 5 miles from the lake. Smaller parks are simpler. Headworks Park and ATV Trails has electric hookups and primitive sites at no charge, with restrooms open in summer and no dump station or direct water hookups. Cell coverage is spotty in the Sandhills; download maps and reservations before leaving town.
