Campgrounds and RV parks near Palmyra, NE

The Salt Valley lakes anchor most trip plans. Anglers at Wagon Train State Recreation Area will find bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, freshwater drum, largemouth bass, muskellunge, redear sunfish, walleye and wiper, among other species. All boats are welcome at Wagon Train, though a 5-mph speed limit is enforced, and the area has two docks and one boat ramp. Stagecoach State Recreation Area has similar no-wake boating and shoreline fishing. Eugene T. Mahoney State Park is the big family draw. Visitors can use the aquatic center and indoor playground, hike and bike the park's trails, and climb the 42-foot indoor climbing wall or the observation tower. The Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum and Wildlife Safari Park are nearby and pair well with an Ashland-area stay.

Southeastern Nebraska has a humid continental climate with a strong seasonal swing. The wettest time of year is normally in late spring, May and June, and the driest time of year is normally in the middle of winter, January and February, so trip planners should expect thunderstorms and occasional severe weather in May and June and generally drier, hotter conditions in July and August. Late spring through early fall is the core RV season on the Salt Valley lakes. Weekends fill fastest around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, when Nebraska Game and Parks requires a minimum three-night stay including both Friday and Saturday at reservable sites. Reservable sites at Mahoney State Park often sell out well in advance during peak weekends. Shoulder season in September and October brings cooler nights, lower bug pressure, and easier site selection. Winter is quiet but not closed. Mahoney's cold-weather programming includes indoor rock climbing, sledding and ice skating, and modern facilities such as full-hookup service, showers, dump and fill stations at state recreation areas typically close from mid-October through mid-April depending on weather, so confirm hookup availability before booking a cold-season trip.

Expect straightforward, prairie-lake camping rather than mountain scenery. Wagon Train offers Electric Plus, Electric and Basic campsites, with 28 camping pads with 20-, 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and 80 non-pad sites without electricity. Water, vault toilets and a dump station are available to campers. Stagecoach has a similar setup with a smaller footprint and mostly open sites near the water. Mahoney is the most developed option in the area. Campsites 1-99 are at Little Creek Campground, and 100-148 are at Lakeside Campground. Little Creek has a basketball court, playground, and coin-operated laundry facility, and RV-equipped sites offer 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electricity, sewer and water hookups, fire rings, grills, modern restrooms and picnic tables. The campground is in a hilly area, so some sites may require levelers, and some sites can accommodate RVs or trailers up to 60 feet long. Pine Grove RV Park offers big-rig friendly sites with 30- and 50-amp hookups, water and sewer right off I-80.
