Camping near Tecumseh, Nebraska
Tecumseh sits in Johnson County in southeast Nebraska, roughly an hour south of Lincoln and just off Highway 136. The town itself is small, so most RV travelers base out of campgrounds in the surrounding Salt Valley lake region or along the Missouri River corridor to the east. Options range from full-hookup commercial parks to first-come, first-served state recreation areas.
The closest developed RV facility is the Auburn Recreational Complex, a 30-acre city facility with RV hookups about 35 minutes east of town. To the southwest, Rockford State Recreation Area Swimming Beach sits on a 150-acre lake surrounded by roughly 300 land acres and offers boating, fishing, picnicking, swimming and camping. Northwest of Tecumseh, Wagon Train State Recreation Area sits 2.5 miles east of Hickman as a 315-acre lake surrounded by 746 acres of land, with fishing, no-wake boating, picnicking, a swimming beach and camping. For full-hookup stays, Hidden Falls Cabins and RV Park and Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds round out the area's commercial options.
Things to do near Tecumseh
Most activity in the region centers on the Salt Valley lakes and the Missouri River corridor. Wagon Train Lake is one of twenty Salt Valley lakes located within a 25-mile radius of the Lincoln Metropolitan Area, making day-trip fishing and paddling easy. Anglers at Wagon Train State Recreation Area will find bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, freshwater drum, largemouth bass, muskellunge, redear sunfish, walleye and wiper. At Rockford State Recreation Area Swimming Beach, families use the lake beach in summer, and the area offers a one-mile hiking trail; horses and mountain bikes are not permitted. The Auburn Recreational Complex includes a 0.8-mile, 10-foot-wide concrete biking trail, two sand volleyball courts, baseball, softball and soccer fields, a picnic shelter and RV hookups.

The main RV season runs roughly April through October. Municipal and commercial parks set hard shoulder dates because of freeze risk: the Auburn RV Park is open from April 1 through October 31, weather permitting, and if it is likely to freeze the water will not be turned on until it is safe to do so or the water will be shut off early if necessary. State recreation areas remain open year-round but become primitive once water systems shut down in late fall.
Spring brings the wettest weather and the highest thunderstorm frequency, with May typically among the rainiest months. Summer is hot, humid, and busy, especially around the Salt Valley lakes near Lincoln. Drought has affected southeast Nebraska, and Wagon Train lake levels remained low after an Aquatic Habitat Project renovation, with swimming, boating and fishing hindered in some seasons. Ongoing drought conditions may result in local fire bans, so before visiting, call ahead to check if campfires are permitted. Fall offers cooler nights, lighter crowds, and stable weather through mid-October.
How to book campgrounds near Tecumseh
Booking rules vary by operator, so check each campground before arrival. For Nebraska state recreation areas managed by Nebraska Game and Parks, reservations are accepted for cabins, lodge rooms and group lodges up to one year in advance, and reservations for camping are accepted up to 180 days in advance of arrival; call the Reservation Call Center at 1-844-637-2757 (1-844-NEPARKS) or book online. A few state areas remain walk-up only: Wagon Train State Recreation Area offers 28 camping pads with 20-, 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and 80 non-pad sites without electricity, with water, primitive restrooms and a dump station available, and all camping is first-come, first-served. Rockford State Recreation Area Swimming Beach uses the same first-come, first-served system. A park entry permit is required to visit state parks and may be purchased at the park, statewide Game and Parks offices and permit vendors, or in advance of arrival online. Private parks such as Victorian Acres RV Park and Campgrounds and Hidden Falls Cabins and RV Park take direct reservations through their own websites.
What to expect on site
Facility levels vary widely. Private parks offer the most amenities, typically including full hookups with water and electricity, bath houses, laundry, free WiFi and pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs. State recreation areas are more rustic. At Rockford, there are 30 camping pads with 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups, two camping pads without electricity and 40 non-pad sites without electricity, with water and vault toilets available but no showers, modern restrooms or dump station. The Auburn Recreational Complex has water and electric hookups and a dump station but no on-site showers. Cell coverage can be patchy at the more remote lakes, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
