Water recreation drives most itineraries. Summers are hot, arid, and mostly clear, with afternoon highs regularly in the 90s Fahrenheit and daytime shade at a premium, especially at River Camp and open beach sites. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Water levels and fishing tend to be strong in spring, while fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and active waterfowl migration through the Humboldt and Carson corridors. Wildflowers appear across the sagebrush flats in late spring. Winters are short and cold, with hard freezes, occasional snow, and reduced services at primitive sites. Sites remain accessible for self-contained rigs, but campers should expect limited water availability in freezing weather and prepare for wide day-night temperature swings across every season.

Expect a mix of paved and gravel sites, wide spacing, and limited shade. Rye Patch's river campground below the dam has paved pads, picnic tables with shade shelters, fire rings, water spigots, and a dump station, with flush toilets and hot showers on site. Only a small number of sites carry electric hookups, so most stays are effectively dry camping. Sites accommodate rigs up to about 75 feet, but the access road demands slow, careful driving for larger units. At Lahontan's River Camp, amenities are more basic: picnic tables, fire pits, and portable toilets, with well-spaced sites and open sun exposure. Cell service is fair around the reservoirs. In-town options like Star Peak RV Park and Desert Rose RV Park offer full hookups, level pads, and quick fuel and grocery access off I-80.
