Camping near Port Reading, New Jersey
Port Reading sits in Middlesex County along the Arthur Kill, roughly midway between Newark and the Raritan Bayshore. The area itself is dense suburban and industrial, so RV travelers typically base at campgrounds within a 20 to 60 minute drive that fit two very different trip styles: urban sightseeing toward New York City, or forested state and county parks to the south.
For NYC-oriented stays, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers full hookups with PATH and ferry access to Manhattan. Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, provides National Park Service tent and RV camping across the harbor.
Heading south into Monmouth County, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township and Allaire State Park near Farmingdale offer wooded sites, trails, and freshwater fishing, though Allaire's family campsites are currently closed for bathhouse construction. Pine Cone Campgrounds serves as another regional option. Together these campgrounds let travelers pair Jersey Shore beach days, historic-village visits, and city excursions from a single trip.
Things to do near Port Reading
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, the PATH subway and NY Waterway ferry put lower Manhattan roughly 15 minutes away, with Liberty State Park and the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry terminals within easy reach. Floyd Bennett Field adds bike paths, historic aircraft hangars, an archery range, and access to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and Jacob Riis Park.
To the south, Allaire State Park centers on the 19th-century Allaire Village iron-making town and the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge train, plus a wide network of multi-use hiking, biking, and horseback trails and freshwater fishing along the Manasquan River.
Turkey Swamp Park offers a 17-acre lake for fishing and boat rentals, an archery range, four playgrounds, and about nine miles of multi-use trails through pine-and-oak woods on the northern edge of the Pine Barrens. Six Flags Great Adventure and the Jersey Shore beaches are both within a short drive.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

Floyd Bennett Field offers tent and RV sites on former airfield grounds, with a camp store, showers, and a dump station, but no hookups and only limited generator hours for RVs.
Allaire has 45 wooded tent and trailer sites plus ten shelters, with flush toilets, showers within walking distance, and a trailer sanitary station that runs April 15 through October 15. Interior roads are narrow and favor smaller rigs, and family sites are currently closed.
Turkey Swamp offers 64 pull-through sites with water and electric, modern restrooms with hot showers, laundry, and a dump station. Black bears are present statewide, so food should be stored securely, and ticks are common in wooded areas from spring through fall.
