Camping near Angustura, New Mexico
Angustura is an unincorporated community in San Juan County in the northwest corner of New Mexico, sitting between Bloomfield to the west and Blanco to the east along U.S. Route 64. The San Juan River forms its southern boundary, and Farmington lies about 17 miles west via US-64, making it the closest hub for groceries, fuel, and RV supplies.
The area serves as a practical base for exploring the San Juan Basin. The Angel Peak Scenic Area is a Bureau of Land Management recreation area located about 15 miles south of Bloomfield in San Juan County, and encompasses more than 10,000 acres of rugged terrain featuring Angel Peak, colorful badlands and deep canyons. Navajo Lake State Park sits 26 miles east of Bloomfield with 150 miles of shoreline and over 280 days of sunshine.
For RVers, private options cluster along the US-64 corridor. Florez Riverview RV Park and Campground, Florez Riverview Campground, Moore's RV Park and Campground, and Ruins Road RV Park and Campground handle full-service stays with hookups, while Angel Peak RV Park offers a quieter high-desert alternative south of Bloomfield.
Things to do around Angustura
The San Juan Basin's archaeology draws most first-time visitors. Aztec Ruins National Monument preserves the remarkable remains of an ancestral Puebloan farming community, including a twelfth-century Chacoan great house, and was one of the largest Puebloan settlements in the Southwest. Salmon Ruins, just west of Bloomfield, are the remains of another eleventh-century Chacoan great house.
Fishing is a popular activity throughout the year at Navajo Lake, a year-round fishery for rainbow and brown trout, Kokanee salmon, northern pike, large and small mouth bass, bluegill, crappie, perch, and catfish. A 4.25-mile section of special catch and release waters at the base of Navajo Dam, known as Quality Waters, brings anglers from around the world, and the average trout measures over 17 inches.
At Angel Peak, short rim trails, three developed picnic areas, and views into the Kutz Canyon badlands fill an easy half-day. Farther out, the Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness offers dispersed hiking through hoodoo fields.

The Angel Peak area is open year-round, and spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather, while summer can bring extreme heat, and winter and wet conditions may make access roads and trails muddy or impassable. That same pattern applies across the San Juan Basin, so shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV travel.
Summer is peak season at Navajo Lake State Park, when the marinas, boat rentals, and lakeshore campgrounds run at full tilt. The wettest month in Farmington is July, collecting about 29 mm of precipitation, with brief afternoon monsoon storms common. Fire restrictions can tighten quickly in early summer before the monsoon arrives.
Winter is quiet. Snow is regular but usually light at valley elevations, and some state park loops and dirt access roads become intermittently difficult. In winter, when snow covers the ground, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible at Navajo Lake State Park. Fishing is excellent year-round, with spring and fall typically offering the best catches.
How to book campgrounds near Angustura
Private RV parks along US-64, including Florez Riverview RV Park and Campground, Moore's RV Park and Campground, and Ruins Road RV Park and Campground, take direct phone or online reservations. Availability tightens on weekends in summer and during major fishing events on the San Juan.
Navajo Lake State Park campsites are reserved through newmexicostateparks.reserveamerica.com, and the park features 7 campgrounds with 244 developed campsites plus primitive sites along the beach. Reservations can be made for today and up to 6 months in advance.
Angel Peak Campground has nine sites available for tent camping, and is a free first-come, first-served BLM campground. Camping stays must not exceed 14 days within a 30-day period. Larger rigs should scout sites first, as only a few pads accommodate RVs.
What to expect on the ground
Angustura sits in high-desert country at roughly 5,600 feet, so nights run cool even in summer and sun exposure is intense. The scenic areas nearby are arid environments, so plenty of water is essential, and a hat and sunscreen are recommended.
Roads matter here. Gravel parking is available at Angel Peak's picnic areas and campground, and roads may require high-clearance vehicles when wet. The gravel access road can become impassable in bad weather, so check forecasts before towing a trailer down county roads.
Active gas wells exist in the Angel Peak Scenic Area, so stay away from well pads, pipelines, and other oilfield equipment. Cell coverage is limited in the area, so bring offline maps and do not plan on remote work here. Bloomfield and Farmington cover groceries, fuel, propane, and dump stations.
